Mid range cost work knife - why no M4/Cruwear w/ FRCP

#1

Post by ZMW »

My daily knife uses are super light office duty, so my delica and urban are perfect. On the weekends, sometimes I do some solid work with my knives which is now usually my PMA11 mule. But, I'm curious what your thoughts are on the best bang for your buck work knife/steel? LW Manix S110v, Gayle Bradley is not too expensive, SE Pac Salt, or something different?

I am curious why there are not "tougher" steels like M4, cruwear, etc on more standard production knives that are affordable - FRN or FRCP to keep the costs down. If a LW Manix S110v is $115 +/-, wouldn't cruwear or M4 be slightly less expensive but perhaps a great choice for a work knife due to increase toughness? A little cheaper and tougher sounds like a good package.

I assume spyderco likes stainless in their standard production so people do not get pissed about having corrosion issues on their knives. But, curious what you guys think.

LW Manix or Native in M4 or cruwear for an awesome (semi) budget work knife, or a different combo?

^^Spyderco Value line or any Byrd.

I think decent stain resistance is an important factor for most non-knife knut buyers, along with cost.

FRN Dyad with H1 serrated blade and Cruwear plain edge would be interesting.

Based on the price point of the Para3's, I would think that an N5 LW in CRUWEAR would be about the same price as the S35vn?

I think the N5 LW is an amazing bang for the buck work knife. You can buy cheaper, but its such a solid performer with a much better steel than 8cr or BD1.

A Manix or Native LW in M4 would be a dream come true for me. For now I have to settle for Maxamet :D

I have always used the Salt or Rescue knives as my weekend beater blades (if not a Mule)

I'd say there's a lot going on with sales that we enthusiasts don't see. It's probably hard to sell the average working man a $100+ knife and expect him to cut drywall and shingles with it and also have to worry about rust. Most knife users see rust prone steels as inferior despite whatever increase in toughness they have over stainless steels.

Now, would I like to see a Manix 2 LW in M4? Absolutely.

I love my Pac Salt! Just curious if M4 or cruwear in a more price friendly package would make sense. But, it is hard to beat my current SE Pac Salt/PMA 11 mule combo...

It all depends on what you're doing for work. Delica, Native 5 LW, & Manix 2 LW are the first that come to mind for me.

Today I have a UKPK LW S110V with me at work. It does everything I need it do and is relatively inexpensive.

The Stretch is also a great option at a good price, and your choice of VG10 or ZDP. Probably my go to work knife, that or the Manix2 LW.

Gayle Bradley for the work knife. Think it's the best bang for your buck ( I would rate it better than many double the price )

My first thought is the S110V Manix lightweight.

Another vote for the LW Manix 2. S110V or the currently available orange S90V Sprint from Cutlery Shoppe.

I think the Tenacious is a good knife, but in my head 8cr13mov is just too "cheap" for my tastes. I really wish they upgraded the steel in the Tenacious for a Sprint; nothing too expensive, maybe CTS BD1, AUS10, 154 CM, N690, Sandvik... Or get crazy with some CTS XHP or CPM S30V. They just put out a CF/G10 laminate run, I was disappointed to see the steel wasn't new.

Oh, probably a tencacious or Manix , maybe a param-KERSHAW CRYO! Let's be real here, for a work knife, Spyderco can get pretty overpriced, especially for a non knife nut. I mean, I am a knife nut, and I like spyderco, but you gotta love a cheap beater knife that's still a quality design. Another reality check (albeit a controversial one) is... no one is ever going to use any steel to complete unusable dullness in one day, and beyond that you can just sharpen it. I actually enjoy sharpening my knives.

a byrd knife?

Honestly, all these premium knives are pocket jewelry. Only the Delica or Endura ever see work by the wider public, or maybe a paramilitary. If you want an expensive knife you won't care about destroying, and can bring inside the office, and has all the super steel credentials, go with a Native.
