Received the Autonomy on 1/28/16 received the below emailed letter from Blade HQ on March 7, 2016.....

Dear Blade HQ Customer:

Thank you for your recent purchase of a Spyderco Autonomy automatic knife from Blade HQ. We truly appreciate your patronage!

The version of the knife you received was originally developed for the U.S. Coast Guard exclusively for use by their rescue swimmers. These highly trained personnel wear a special vest with a pocket specifically designed to carry these knives, so their version of the Autonomy does not include a secondary safety. Unfortunately, that makes this configuration of the knife unsuitable for everyday carry in a pants pocket.

To ensure that you can carry your Spyderco Autonomy with complete safety, we need to exchange the knife you currently have for a newly developed orange-handled version that includes a firing-button safety and a reversible wire clip. This new version of the Autonomy will allow you to enjoy all the same qualities of your current knife, but with the added convenience of a pocket clip and the security of a secondary safety. It will also allow Blade HQ and Spyderco to best support the needs of the U.S. Coast Guard by ensuring uninterrupted availability of their mission-specific version of the Autonomy.

Thank you very much for your understanding and cooperation in this matter. Please ship your knife as soon as possible to:

Blade HQ

ATTN: Spyderco Autonomy
400 S 1000 E, Suite E1
Lehi, UT 84043

We will exchange your knife and ship it to you in April.
Just wondering how many of you Spyderco collectors would have returned the knife........In my opinion that knife does not need a safety because
it takes a lot of pressure to open it anyway and it is not an everyday carry for me as it remains in the box in my collection.

Thanks for your opinion...

I would only exchange it if I wanted to. Not having a clip on a knife like that would be annoying, but you now have a super difficult to procure model if that is the kind of thing that you like

I wouldn't want it without the clip so that's cause enough for me to exchange it. It's not like you have to use the lock safety feature.

Hi Jhatha,

Welcome to our forum.

Some of the Coast Guard models were shipped out, in error, to other than the Coast Guard. In our opinion, they are not safe to carry in other than a coast guard BC. We had to make a reasonable effort to retrieve them, which we did.

I have returned it because I prefer the all black to the orange.

Still have the orange Coast Guard model without clip or safety....safety not necessary....takes quite a bit of pressure to depress button......Wonder what kind of money that knife could bring? BTW I like the orange color.....

I have the safety version, a gift from my Coast Guard son.. It's an incredible knife. It would be the knife I kept it I had to let all my others go. It's my duty knife that rides in my vest in my job as a police officer. I agree with Sal in that I wouldn't want that kind of knife in my pocket without the safety. I like the clip. It keeps me from losing it if I have to crawl around, or worst case I have to roll around on the ground with someone.

Go to Full Editor near the bottom, then attachments. Click on add files and your pic. Click on place inline and follow the prompts from there. I'd love to see your knife!

Any chance to buy an Autonomy in Europe? No dealer sells them, but in Austria they are still allowed to carry.
I was considering buying one for my brother, he is a firefighter.

So no **** I literally just got a autonomy in orange without lock or clip from blade hq. Took a wire clip off another spyderco and put a lynch on it. Why ask for the swap and retain one just to sell it off...
