Monster Roc

So I've fallen in love with the Roc. Only complaint, it could be bigger. I would love to see a Roc about double the size. What are the chances of this, and is there any avenue for requesting this kind of thing?

It would be interesting to see it done as a fixed blade.

You might want to take a look at the RAD knives field cleaver, not sure what they cost but it is larger than a Roc :)

It's quite blade heavy already, so I suspect balance issues would crop up if you made it twice as big.

Titanium blade. Problem solved ;)

Not really a fan of the shape of it. Does look big though.

Big fixed blade with a karambit loop in the handle.

Slow going because I don't really have the proper tools, but this is what I got so far. Handle is a Spyderco Resilience. Approximately 9" long from tip to end of handle. Edge length of 3.5". hopefully more coming soon

Gerber has a cleaver they debuted at Shot Show. Folding cleavers are like folding stock shotguns to me- reduced performance capacity of a heavy duty tool.

Yeah, even the original Roc is really just a looker and hardly has an actual use, but that's why I got it. I liked the look of it and have plenty of utility knives.

Coming along nicely, actually locks open, kinda messed up the grind on the lock ramp but it works. I have no idea how I'm going to thin the knife out as what it's sitting on is my only "tool" and holding it flat against the belt is just begging for removed fingertips. Still need to grind the closed stop and flush the top spine with the handle

One issue I am having is whether I can add the "spide hole" or not because it's patented. I might try to do something else but haven't figured it out yet.

Parents have long expired on the Spydie hole (it is still a trademark though). And patents don’t prevent you from making things, just from selling them.

You can bevel the blade with a file. It will take hours. What kind of steel is it? Is it something you can heat treat?

Bevel isn't my big concern, it's just that the blade is really thick, I have to loosen the handle screws just to slide it in there, so I gotta find a way to make the whole blade thinner. The steel is home depot special so I imagine it can be heat treated, just not to an insane degree.

Got it. Yeah thinning stock is hard without fancy tools.

No, Home Depot steel cannot be heat treated. It’s just mild steel. It won’t harden.

Ah, well I guess this will be a prototype then. Good to know before I pulled my hair out trying to harden it

Yeah you probably want some 1084 that you can harden yourself relatively easily.

Yeah I'll probably grab some of that, maybe I can get some a little closer to my thickness too lol

.125 is a common stock thickness and as close as you’ll get. Once you grind it flat it will be in the ballpark.
