Does anyone else struggle with rotating?

Post by Evil D »

I just can't do it. I can't switch knives from day to day. Not even within the same model, like different steels etc. I get really attached to one knife and it literally bothers me to carry anything else.

It kinda sucks. I do eventually switch to other knives but over time my preferences have really honed in on what I want and don't want and I always tend to reach for the same knife.

Couldn't agree with you more Evil D. However in my case it's hard to use one out of my collection especially the higher end models. I guess that makes me more of a collector.

I find myself doing the same thing. Most of the time I only switch out if the situation that I will be using the knife warrants it. I do find myself carring more than one knife lately one for practical and one for tactical use.

I often have to force myself to rotate. The worst time for that is when I get a new knife and it doesn't want to leave my pocket. It's going to be really bad when the HAP40 Caly3 is out...
One thing that's helped me to rotate: back in September, I got curious about how often I carried each knife, so I started tracking it. I kept a tally of each one, and the results were pretty interesting. And after a week or two you get an idea of which knives are carried less often than others, and you can make a point to carry those.

It's a little easier for me, because i carry 2 or 3 knives at a time. But I was doing fine in my rotation until I got the Yojimbo. It has not left my pocket since I got it. My poor PM2's and karambits feels so rejected. Over all I will say I try to change it up often, I carry different knives for different activities, work, play, restaurant, ect. But my carry seems to mostly revolve around 5 or 6 out of the 32 knives I have.

*it usually takes a new knife to break the cycle.

Just the opposite. I seldom carry one more than a couple of days in a row. As for high end ones, I carry em like any other but seldom cut with them.

Nope, no trouble at all. The only constant for me is the burgundy Micarta Jester on my key ring, it's been there for almost 14 years. Beyond that, while I do stick to a few models, the knives themselves vary quite a bit. The Kiwi I carry on any given day can be any one of about 70. Can't recall ever carrying the same one for more than a week although I'll admit I do favor a dozen or so of them. Same, to a lesser degree, when it comes to a larger folder. It's usually a Stretch, but can be an FRN VG-10 one, or any one of my four "woodies". However, it gets replaced by a CF Chaparral or Centofante Memory if I'm heading into Greenville where there's a 3" blade limit, or my birdseye maple Atlantic Salt if I'm walking Bear on a warm and rainy day.

I have no trouble to rotate the Spydies in RFP every day or so, but I rarely change the SAK (Pioneer X) in LFP. Go figure... :p

I have no problems rotating. I like the variety. Sometimes I'll swap mid day or swap after work. I like to carry them all. I do lean very hard on my Cruwear Military. If I could only have one right now it would be it.

However, on the other hand I will say that there is absolutely nothing wrong with knowing exactly what you like. If anything that is a really good thing. That is a journey that some people never find the end to.

I have just few knives in use and each has it's own use.
Monday-Thursday at work : Caly to cut food, Ti Fluted N5 for everything else
Friday at work: ZT0562CF and Ti Fluted N5
Weekends, if I go out: ZT0562CF and Ti Fluted N5
2013 Forum native is EDC at home.
Dress-up events: Hungarian, Memory, Persian, Kopa.
All of this design to give me an opportunity to use several knives, which I like, otherwise it would be only Native and Caly. And lately I found myself using Caly3 much more than Caly3.5. Still love both.

My top choices Natives5, Calys, C83 Persian

Here in the past few months I tend to rotate my "companion blades" much more than I do my main EDC love. Until I find another Military or other model that can beat my M390 Military model performance wise I'll probably end up wearing it out ( if that's possible  )

Now I do about once every two weeks get out my C-60 Ayoob model mainly because of the compliments I get from it. But I do love it's super-ergonomic blade design. If they would ever do an Ayoob in M390 or that 204P then and only then will I give my M390 Military a break from the action.

As far as my companion blades which are mostly Hawkbills I rotate them at least twice a week or so. With my original stainless handled RESCUE from the ATS-55 era>> I'll never get rid of that folding crocidile

Haha, this is like the first-world-est of first world problems! :D

I guess I fall mostly in the "honeymoon" category, where I tend to want to carry my newest acquisition, but every once in a while an outlier comes along that sticks around in the rotation longer than usual. The most recent such knife for me is my Sage 5. Something about it just "clicks" for me and I tend to just stick with it if it's at the top of the pocket dump drawer, rather than pulling another knife out of storage. And lately when I do force myself to switch it up, I miss the Sage! Great job, Sal!

I use too struggle, but every knife I have is such a great knife I no longer struggle with carrying more then one. They all get treated fairly now a days. I do probably carry the Para 3 or Spydiechef the most though..

I don't have a problem.

I have a few knives set out for my EDC, more like 20ish right now. I am usually picking a Manix 2 or Native 5, G-10 or FRN. It sure is nice having to pick between S110V and S90V and Maxamet. :)

On the days I am setup for left handed carry (for medical reasons), I am almost always picking my Manix 2 FRN S110V, because there are only a couple of knives I have setup for left handed carry.

I'm really trying to switch it up daily, but it's hard :p I already spend too much time in from of the display each morning as it is!
I tend to gravitate towards certain models more often than others (GB, Southard, PM2, Chap3, etc.).
And when I finally break the habit of taking one of those, it's never too long until I lure myself into getting a new Spydie...
Whenever a new Spydie appears in the mailbox, that one will be carried for days on end to develop an opinion on it based on usage.
This time, the Techno arrived and messed up the switching routine :p

Some days I wonder if it were better to stick with 10-15 or so Spydies and keep it manageable...
But then I look at all those beauties and I get sucked right back in! :D

Yes. I'm completely into my Dflies right now. I try to carry another, but change it back. Kind if annoying, since I really like my Delicas, but that's how I roll with current favorites. I know it'll change sometime, but I just like my current favorites.

Of course, I do only use the Delica Wharnie at work now, and always carry a larger knife in my right back pocket.
- best wishes, Jazz.

I'd say I'm starting to struggle.

I usually have two :spyder:'s out at a time, a smaller office edc and a larger blade for evenings and weekends. The "two" have seemed to keep going unchanged for longer and longer periods of time.

Lately it's been my Cruwear Manix and Kiwi 4. The Kiwi is still my newest folder, but I'd say I've already blown through the "honeymoon" period and just kept rolling with it. Really been favoring the Manix for a while now too, but I do rotate some between Cruwear and XHP (foliage g10) if that counts. :p

I still pull other stuff out sometimes and try to change it up, but it's often just for a day or two, changing it up for the sake of changing it up... first world problems indeed.

Still not sweating the collection though, there's nothing I have that I don't enjoy owning. I have let a few go here and there in an attempt to maintain it at under about 2 dozen (somewhat arbitrary, but it feels about right for me).

I expect that warmer weather will spur some rotation if nothing else. Summer has a way of remining me how much I like my lightweights. :)

I find it easy to rotate through various steels & models especially when I buy users from folks who for whatever reason they don't want that particular knife anymore; I've also picked up some different steels at the Seconds Sale which allow me (mentally) to really enjoy putting knives through their paces without worrying about collector value.
