If someone did a full deep hollow grind on an American Tanto I might agree, but the super thick tip is generally not advantageous in cutting tasks, it's durable, designed for penetration, not necessarily easy cutting.
It sounds almost as likely that the second point on the Tanto is acting like the tip on a wharncliffe.

Solution, get the Wharncliffe Delica and realise that all other knives are inferior box openers...

...And then pester Sal for a full flat Wharncliffe HAP-40 Endura (in Orange G10).
