New Models Dropped: Para 3, Efficient (Pics)

Post by dplafoll »

As always, thanks to Mark's Outdoors in Vestavia Hills, AL for allowing me to fondle and photograph the knives.

Album link: https://flic.kr/s/aHskRBxBA4

Para 3: It's exactly what I expected. That's not a bad thing, but I didn't expect it to knock me off my feet, and it didn't. It's a smaller Para Military 2, and it's really good. I expect Spyderco to sell a giant pile of these.
The interesting comparison for me for this knife is with the Sage 5. They are very similar, and I personally was holding off on a Sage 5 to make sure I didn't prefer the Para 3 instead.
Para 3: larger and slightly more accessible SpyderHole, larger lanyard hole, 4-way clip, more secure grip due to more pronounced thumb ramp and the rear hook on the handle. American manufacturing, if that matters to you.
Sage 5: thinner profile (lower hump), wire clip, more elegant design (in my opinion), slightly thinner and lighter handle, thinner blade stock, .01in more cutting edge.
Personally, I'd love to have a Para 3, and I expect I'll get one eventually. But for me, coming down to the details, I prefer the wire clip and the CF laminate, and the leafier blade shape, so I'll probably grab a Sage 5 first. That's no knock on the Para 3, but a personal preference. Otherwise this is a fantastic knife.

Efficient: Now this guy was actually more exciting, because I wasn't sure what to expect. Looking at it in the catalog, my brain thought it was smaller than it is. But it's actually a good size, comparable to a Native 5. The blade shape is very, very similar. The feel in the hand is alike as well, with the liner lock cutout acting very similarly to the Native's finger groove. But, with the rounded shape towards the rear, it also feels like the Ouroboros or the Junior. Compared to the Native, it's a 2-way clip, a much lesser steel, and Chinese manufacturing. But it's half the price and feels great, and I think they'll sell a bunch of these as well. I know I'm certainly going to buy one. At that price, it's a no-brainer for a beater/backup knife for a collector, and likely a very good EDC in general, especially if you want a knife with a steel that gets pretty sharp and sharpens very easily. I do wish they'd added like $10 and gone with CTS BD-1, but I'll be ok.

It's a very excellent addition slotting in between the Tenacious and Persistence, but with (to me) vastly superior ergonomics via the finger choil and a better handle; personally, I also prefer the cutout and no-jimping lockbar on the Efficient. If someone asks me to recommend a starter Spyderco for around $50, I'll point them to this or the base Dragonfly 2, depending on their preference in size. It will be an interesting comparison between the Polestar and Tenacious and if BD-1 is worth the extra money.

Thanks for those pics Patrick! The Para 3 vs. Sage 5 is about what I expected. Looking forward to getting my Para 3 so I can compare them myself. What did you think about the action on Para 3 vs the Sage 5?

Efficient looks great too. I just saw one posted on FB. I think it'll be a very popular gateway Spydie!

You're welcome! Honestly I can't tell much difference between the two in terms of action. They're both very smooth flickable knives.

Patrick, our man on a mission again.
Thanks for the first look. Excellent coverage as usual. I really thought I would wait for a sprint of the p3, but it looks so tempting as is.

I would think that sometime relatively soon we'll see either a Sprint or the S110V version. Maybe both. That's actually another point for the Sage 5 now; I can get the Sage 5 and have the 3-inch S30V comp lock knife, then wait on a Sprint or S110V (or Maxamet?!) Para 3 since the Sage 5 won't likely change.

You're welcome! I'm still looking forward to seeing the Rhino join the lineup. Once it does, I don't think I could recommend almost any of the Tenacious family anymore. Rhino over Ambitious, Efficient over Persistence, Polestar over Tenacious (especially the steel). I could still recommend the Resilience if you want a $50 knife with a 4+ inch blade.

With the higher end materials and being made in Japan I expect the Rhino to be quite a bit more expensive than the Ambitious. So, for someone not ready to spend a lot of money on a knife, you probably have to keep suggesting the Ambitious.

Thanks for the notice on these models.

I'm not sure I'm sold on them yet. I will probably wait for the first Para 3 sprint or the S110V version.

The Rhino is made in Taiwan, with CTS-BD1 steel, and G-10 handles; not exactly high-end. KnifeCenter lists MSRP at $79.95, and retail price at $47.97. If you don't mind me asking, where did you see that it was being made in Japan out of high-end materials?

Thanks a bunch for your impressions and the pictures. I guess that finally tipped me over to get the sage 5 first.

Thanks for the pics. I just ordered an Efficient yesterday. I'm pretty excited about it. Looks like a really nice knife for not much cash.

Nice comparison pics! I was thinking that Efficient would be similar to the Native 5, and you just reaffirmed that!

Thank you, sir. That is kind of you. :) I'm eager to see the Efficient too. Looks like a great model.
