So basically, we moved from Canuk land (where I'm from) to the UK (where the hubz is from) back in March and I was looking through some of our blog posts on MTJS today and stumbled on these pictures of our Spydies -






& I am legit wrecked.

We left them back home cause we brought our cat with us on the flight (terrifying experience by the way) and didn't want complications. I honestly don't think we'll bring them over because I am so afraid of them being confiscated (unlikely I'm sure, but possible). That's not the whole collection and even if we did bring back a few at a time it would take us years (since we're only planning on going back to Canada once a year, maybe twice at most).

I've snagged a new(used) Sage 1 since. It's my favourite knife period so was so happy to be reunited with the sucker. Does not leave my desk drawer and I use it religiously indoors (which I'm always home so it's basically equivalent to an EDC for me ). Live in the UK so I can't take it or most of my favourite Spydies (all liner locks) outside with me anyways, but still miss them so so much...

esp the nishijin ones.. T_T;;

One I miss the most at this point.. my Lum Chinese with Nishijin Glass Fiber scales......

Kay now time to go sulk some more by looking through old pictures.. not sure if having so many images of our collection is good or bad at this point but hey, there are plenty of pictures on the net that would make me miss my dearies.

I have a few of those in my collection.

You guys need to move to the States...just sayin!

Not only could you reclaim your beloved collection, but you could add to it...even automatic opening knives!!! :D

I think there are a number of UK people who have collections, but I don't think they regularly carry them.

Welcome aboard, Elisexavier. I agree with you; leaving Spydies at home always hurts. (I'm only speaking from the experience of going on vacation, though). Still, my theory has always been this: take what you need and/or want and enjoy. I will take usually eight Spydercos with me on a trip--regardless of where I go. They are all easily replaceable models (no rare or hard-to-find models). This way, if any come up missing or stolen, it won't be the end of the world.

In your case, however, I wonder if you couldn't have someone back in Canada simply send you your knives two at a time (or something)? Seems like it might be less risky. I'm just guessing, though. Maybe Demoncase or Johnnie could weigh in?

I'm from the Chicago area and moved to Texas 15 months ago. Summers aren't so bad here. It gets warm but it sure beats the cold winters up north.

Sorry to hear you're missing your Spydies. It's almost as bad as leaving your kids behind. I think if I was in your situation I'd bring the collection over and just be careful to not show them out in public. There are several members on here with large collections and they don't seem to have a problem. Also consider buying a UK Penknife. It's a very nice knife and quite capable.

Elise, I really enjoy yall's website. Your reviews were what led me to buying my first Spyderco. The sage 1 was my second shortly after the pm2 arrived. Less than a year later, I am 20+ knives in... I am a born and bred Texan and I couldn't imagine leaving all my spydies behind. If you guys ever need anything shipped across the pond, let us know. We can make it happen. Except for our Texas Bbq.. It can't leave the state... If you two ever make it down here, feel free to shoot us a message. We will take y'all out to our wild game ranch and you can test out all of your fun toys you guys review. I hope y'all are enjoying it over there, and keep the good stuff coming.

+1. No brainer, this. There is now the choice of Elmax, K390 and s110v in the soon-to-arrive UKPK in legal carry Spydies, which is none too shabby.

But honestly, I carry what I like here.

Which I'm fine with, especially considering I'm around the house most days. Can still use them at home.

Eight Spydercos is a good number - do they not often give you trouble? How risky do you think it is for them to be confiscated? Would love to hear about your experiences with regards to this.

That's a good idea, having others ship them over. Issue then becomes how pricey it is to ship from Canada. Postage is so expensive from there it's at times better to just grab what you need again here.

I cannot stand the winters up north so that's definitely a huge part of the reason why we moved to the UK! I would definitely not have a problem not bringing them out. My issue is a worry over whether they'll be confiscated in the airport . Would obviously fight to get them back if that was the case, but it would probably be a long drawn out process I'm guessing.. I don't know if it would actually happen, just the worry that it might is keeping me from wanting to try. We have a UKPK but by god am I terrible with opening it, you have no idea. Outside I carry a UK legal Opinel, though if I could open the Spydie easily I'd be using that.

Snagged the orange handle one to see if we liked it and I adooore the Pingo. Had the Urban back in Canada and all these knives are fine except for the fact that I'm terrible with Spyderco slippy's. Seriously need to work my hand muscles or something to be able to get those to open for me easier!

Thank you so much! ^^ Spyderco's one of those brands that reels you in I think. You can never have just one, lol. Was my first "true" knife obsession and honestly still is my main one. Though Thomas turned me into a sorta-knife-person (I feel I can't say I'm a true knife person because I'm terrible with the technical aspects of knives) I feel like Spyderco kept me there . Always so much more in the Spydie catalog I want than anywhere else, lol! Will definitely let you know if we swing by Texas! Would be lovely to meet up :).

It'll be comparatively costly and hard to find, but the ultimate slippy (in my opinion) is the Titanium UKPK, mine is the easiest opening *and* one of the most secure when open, of my non-locking Spydercos. Plus the older style has thicker blade stock and that in combination with the Ti scales give it a super solid feel compared to the current FRN UKPKs, or even the ones with G10 handles.

Also if you like the standard Pingo, you can't help but love the Ti Pingo... Mine needed to have gritty polishing compound cleaned out of the pivot and screw sockets, but the effort is well worth it, especially considering that KC still has them for $125.

In all truth, I have probably just been pretty fortunate with not running into any negative experiences when traveling with my knives thus far. (I usually just place my knives within the lining of my checked luggage). Granted, I am likely tempting fate by carrying around eight knives with me when traveling. However, FWIW, I do pay close attention to knife laws when traveling and the knives I bring with me are legally appropriate for the areas I visit. During a recent trip with my family, I actually abstained from entering a neighboring country because I had knives with me that were not legally allowed to be carried in that country. I hope this helps!

Sad to hear that part of your collection is that far away. I'd like to recommend a Squeak, its a very nice little slippie and ergos are spot on as usual from Sal. I have mine clipped on right now and its very capable around the house. The Byrd Tern is another nice non-locking model to consider, but harder to open that the Squeak for sure.
