New Civilian

#1

Post by DBDEV1 »

As a long term owner of the venerable Spyderco "Military" (Digi/Satin), I am surprised it has taken me this long to register here.

Earlier today, I pulled the trigger on the "Civilian" from BHQ, and couldn't be more excited. Although I realize the Civilian's blade will likely never contact any materials, I must say that so far my Millie has been an absolute asset.

In any case, really looking forward to meeting some fellow knife enthusiasts here. Also looking forward to getting my newest addition via USPS :spyder:

Welcome to the Forums!

And, congratulations on your purchase of a Spyderco Civilian! A rather unique knife, to say the least, and a nice addition to anyone's collection.

I'm a huge fan of the Spyderco Military... it's my favorite of the Golden :spyder:s.

Thanks! I agree, and it is definitely my favorite EDC despite the larger size. I find it can handle pretty much any cutting task I throw at it. For those it can't, time to break out the saws. I really purchased the Civilian due to its unique design. I carry a firearm/OC for SD purposes, so I doubt I'll the Civi will see much/any pocket time. But like you said, it is incalculably difficult to pick between the different Spydies.

Must...get...all.. Lol

Appreciate that Water!

It certainly has never let me down, and I don't find the CPMS30V to be exceptionally difficult to sharpen. What a difference the Sharp Maker (sic) makes, though.

Just wanted to give everyone an update.

I received my new Civilian from BHQ today, and it is absolutely AMAZING! My first impression was that the packaging was very secure/protective, and I really enjoyed the high quality zippered case provided with the tool.

As for the Civi itself, WOW! Could you ask for a more unique blade shape? Amazing work with this one, Spyderco. Not sure that I'll be carrying this as a backup to my firearm, but I have no doubt it would be entirely competent at its job. The G-10 texturing is spot on, and the lockup is rock solid. I also love the circular cut-outs in the single SS liner, as I feel it really helps keep the weight down to a reasonable level.

I obviously haven't done any cutting with this blade (nor do I intend to :P ) but from a cursory examination, I can tell that this baby is very sharp and would have no difficulty making the cut, so to speak :D

Overall, I am 110% thrilled with this purchase and would highly recommend the Civilian to anyone looking for: 1) a unique piece for their collection, or; 2) a defensive folder, as a firearm backup. As several others have stated in past reviews, this blade is WICKED.

It is a dangerous blade. I love mine just because it is. If I couldn't have a gun it is what I would choose for self defense.

Same here! I will say this much, I doubt it will be the last Civilian I purchase from BHQ :D Just in case this one ends up being carried.

I must admit, there is a sense of security when holding this knife. Photos simply do not do this blade justice, it is truly something else.

Welcome to the forum, Dave. :) I agree with all your points on the civilian. Such a fantastic single-purpose blade. It's not legal to carry in my state, so it lives on my nightstand (one the benefits to not having kiddos around) as a backup to the firearm in my drawer. Even if I were able to carry, I would still choose my Emerson Matriarch 2 over it if I'm traveling through a rougher part of town. So light I almost forget its there and when opened from the pocket adds onto the intimidation factor.

When I opened up this thread I thought there were CQI changes in the works for the Civi. As opposed to starting a new thread I will leave my request here. I think it would benefit from a larger spydie hole. I can get it opened with both the thumb and middle finger (very carefully with jeans and closed toe shoes on ;) ) easy enough but to have a tad bigger hole would provide more confidence. I think the 14mm such as whats on the PM2 would be perfect.

Fixed that last part for you.
On my radar: 110V Military, Police 4 and some sweet Rex 45 Military action.

Newest Spydies: S90v Ti Military, Pacific Salt and a special Kiwi.

A belated welcome to the Forum DBDEV1 :) If you are impressed with the Civilian model I highly encourage you to check out one of the Matriarch models. It's basically the little sister of the Civilian model and it's also got a Reverse S type blade as well. I actually deem Matriarch model to be a lot more practical for possible every day carry whereas the Civilian is very much a specialty type blade for Law Enforcement and Military applications IMO.

As time goes on I find myself carrying my VG-10 Matriarch model a lot more lately when I got out after dark here where I live ( Kansas City, MO USA Earth). It's also interesting that you mention the C-36 Military model because as far as the Military model goes it's quickly becoming one of my all time favorite Spyderco folders ever. Especially the Sprint Run Military models with the upper tier blade steels. I'm currently EDCing a Military with M390 blade steel and it's probably the most dependable big folder of Spyderco's I've ever used in the past 21 years or so since the Spyder bit me a I became seriously addicted to Spyders :D So I also encourage you to check out some of the Sprint Run Military models with the better blade steels.

But do check out the Matriarch model at some point because if you like the Civilian I believe you'll probably love the Matriarch.
