Slysz Bowie for us peasants?

#1

Post by RichWentFishing504 »

Is there any chance of getting a Slysz bowie but in G-10 and compression lock anytime in the future?

Really liking the Slysz but at its price point its a hard pill to swallow for most.

Anyone else hankering for a clip point design like the Slysz?

Changing the lock and removing those beautiful contoured titanium handles scales kind of changes the knife completely. However, a different blade shape has been asked for many times. I think that would be well received.

I guess what you really want though is a more affordable version of the Slysz Bowie. My thoughts on that are that if Spyderco were to try and make the knife more affordable we would lose much of what makes this knife so great.

A custom Slysz Bowie goes for a lot more than the Spyderco version. So really, this is the "peasant" version. I'm hoping Spyderco continues to bring custom knives to us at these prices.

Peasant though I am, I agree wholly with Cobra. A Slysz is too unique to mess with.

The contoured Ti handle and the lock are the things that I love most about my Slysz Bowie. I also like the rounded spine and the finish on the blade. If I were to change anything it would be the shape of the blade. If the handle were G10 most of it's appeal would be lost for me.

While I will never own one due to the price, I can appreciate all its nuances just as it is. I was gonna even ask for one for xmas, but no I never would ask for a knife so expensive. And I am ALWAYS a few minutes late when they show up in the exchange. So irritating.

Agreed, on all points.

I would love to see an alternate blade shape, as well.... What was the one shown a while back? Sheepsfoot?

Current model has just a touch too much belly for me...

If you feel the Slysz Bowie's cost is unattainable...pick up a second job delivering pizzas, cause it really is that OUTSTANDING!!! :D

But seriously, the design, engineering, execution, fit & finish of this model justifies the price point, IMHO.

And I'll go a bit further and divide Spyderco afi's into two camps about this model:

Camp 1.... Those who think the Slysz Bowie is a bit pricey and hold off purchasing... :(

and

Camp 2... Those who love owning their Bowie and stand amazed at how such a high level of quality can be sold so cheaply... :)

I wouldn't mind a more utilitarian priced Slysz designed knife. Sure, going for G10 handles and whatnot wouldn't be same as the initial knife. But let us see how well the Rubicon 2 is received before writing this idea off entirely.

Also, does it HAVE to be the Bowie model, or could there be a more budget friendly model based on another of his designs?

Does the Spyderchef fit that bill?

Well, I was thinking Swayback ;)

The SpyderChef might, but I dont know the OP's budget. Something like Marcin's larger Rat folder wouldn't be shabby either.

I'd like to see this, but also with a lower tip/slightly different blade... but I'd agree with what has already been mentioned; the different blade in addition to lower cost handle is pretty much a completely different knife.

Is it really worth the investment or would anyone out there recommend saving up the
extra cash and just going with the Nirvana?

Having the money is not the problem with this one. I just look at what it is and think I could get two other really good knives for the price of this one. Maybe someday if there are no other knives I want.

I don't see how redesigning the knife for a compression lock and using one G10 scale is going to cut the cost down much. Unless R&D is free, even then the complexity of a comp lock is higher than a RIL.

The best way to make it "economical" would be to use flat Ti slabs or even SS slabs. The alternative I think is just to buy one used or find another flat-slab Spyderco that's not the same but is similar.
