My first post.........

#1

Post by Gadget »

Hi,

I'm an aussie living in Norway, I have owned a Spyderco Native 5 G10 for a couple of years now and have added to my Spyderco family with three little insects during this year, Bug, Honeybee and Grasshopper.......

Image

If you look at my photo you can probably see that the Native 5 has had little use, I do carry it but it's so nice that I usually end up using some old junky knife for most of the jobs I encounter............

My next Spyderco will be a Paramilitary 2, but because of the above problem I was thinking of buying a used one.......... how do I get over the hurdle of not wanting to mess up a new knife? :(

cheers, John

Welcome to The Forum John.
Use your Native5 and enjoy it. I carry one of my Natives every day. 2013 Forum knife has a lot of miles on it and I enjoy using it. Second most carried is Ti Fluted. This even nicer in the hand and the blade has quite a few scratches. N5 is the great EDC.

My top choices Natives5, Calys, C83 Persian

Hi Gadget,

Welcome to our forum.

An Aussie in Norway. Opposite ends of the glob for sure.

The real pleasure of a Spyderco is in the using of it. That's why we put all f that good stuff in it.

I wish I could help with that, but I have the opposite problem. The pristine finish on my new knives generally doesn't last out the first day. I see pictures people post of their "users" and they look better than my new ones. Here's my user CF/S90V Military next to its backup.

Thanks for that yablanowitz,

I solved the problem and bought a used Pacific Salt, maybe that's the way to go! I collect military aircrew kit and these knives are used by the USMC/USN aircrew so it's a user and can part of my collection ;)

cheers, John

:spyder: John welcome to the Forum :) ... I have one cure for your illness ... Purchase as many same model SPIDIE as your pocket can afford and then lie them down, close your eyes and just pick one ... Let this one be your user ... Every time you are sorry for the use you put on this one, just remember that you have another NIB one near by ;) ... :spyder:

Welcome, and please just use it. Using a good knife is part of enjoying life. Using a crappy one isn't. It's a good knife, and will hold up to a lot.
- best wishes, Jazz.

Welcome John,

I'd say that 50 to 90% (depending on the model) of the beauty of a Spyderco is in the using. Like Sal said, you can't enjoy all the "good stuff" without putting it through its paces!

I notice every new scratch on my knives. But in the end I decided I would rather use them than look at them. I have a creative solution for you, when you finally do buy that PM2 (best knife spyderco makes if you ask me) get one of the DLC coated Black Blades. Black coated blades look so cool after you've used them for a few months and you've got a nice scatched and weathered look to them. In fact some knife companies are starting to offer a finish that looks like used and faded black DLC. kershaw calls theirs 'blackwash'. That way the more you use it, the more you wear the DLC, the better it looks.
btw welcome!

sorry I don't have any pics of Spyderco's with worn DLC. I own so many all black emersons, since I made the switch to spyderco I've bought nothing but colorful knives.

Welcome to the forum Gadget. :)

Mate, I hate scratches, chips, nicks, dings, rub marks, patina ......., but only till I notice the first blemish then I relax and just use it.

Welcome to the Spyderco Forum!

And, use the :spyder:s that you get to include the Spyderco Para Military 2. With use, a knife gains character through its collection of scratches and dings, and you'll find yourself enjoying its warscores over the years as earned badges of cutting accomplishments.

Th best way to get over blemishing your knife is to simply do it. Go put it to good use. Realize that a well worn knife with scratches all over it is a sign of being used for what it was designed for and that's never a bad thing. Life is short, you can't take it with you.

Welcome to the forum first of all! :)
As for keeping knives pristine... I share this habit with quite a lot of my knives, but I was pretty obsessed with keeping them near mint when I first started collecting.
What I did back then was look for used models I wanted to try out or buy a backup. The first scratch hurts the most, so buying a used one justified using it for things beyond opening letters in my case ;)

Welcome! To answer your question about using a new knife, you just have to make a serious commitment to buying user knives. I use all of mine, including my $400+ Nirvana. Do I abuse the nicer ones? No, not really. But I do use them. And I personally prefer to buy new knives because I like that it's mine straight from the factory. There's nothing wrong with a used knife, but there isn't a CarFax for knives and you don't know what that knife has been through. And part of the appeal is for me to write my own story for the knife straight from the box. So I buy new knives to use, and I had to decide to commit to that when I started all this.

Very cool! Welcome to the forum, Gadget!

Do you like the local Norwegien Knives, as well, such as the Helle and Brusletto knives? I would like to see Spyderco and Helle and Brusletto all make some collaborations together.
