If I love the Urban, will I love the Squeak?

#1

Post by Cogito »

Im im love with the Urban, and I'm considering picking one of these up. Does anybody here own both, or have you handled both?

My only concern is that I really do not want to have duplicates of the same knife. I would rather venture into a different model. Was thinking about getting a manbug or ladybug but this Squek looks pretty cool. But if it's too similar to the Urban, I'll probably pass for now. Suggestions?

Thanks guys!

I prefer the Manbug over the Squeak. Unless you need a pocket clip then go with the Squeak.

Love the Squeak, my non work carry knife with another Spyderco. Reminds me the CO-Pilot I had years back. Great small knife that will do most hard work in IOP. Gary

Nothing against the Manbug, which is superb, but the Squeak's larger handle makes it easier to use a little harder, and it's almost comically dumpy appearance offends absolutely no-one, and I can't imagine it's not legal everywhere except for air travel. It goes within saying that they both cut well.

I had a Squeak and did not care that much for it. It has a very short very wide blade, good for spreading butter, I guess. But the biggest issue was the back spring was too weak on mine. I gifted it to someone who needed such a knife. It is much smaller than the Urban.

If you want a small knife, get a Manbug, which has the same blade length but has more useable blade style. A Dragonfly is a good choice, too.

I love every member of the Caly(pso) family, and the Urban and Squeak definitely belong in that range of designs. The Squeak might not be much smaller on paper, but it definitely carries and handles like a significantly smaller knife than the Urban. Both knives (and the rest of the Caly range) share the same 'cockpit', so the ergos will be very familiar. The Squeak is a wonderful little EDC utility knife that great to use among non-knife people.

I got my Squeak for the steel. Like the Urban, it is a slip-it. For me the comparison ends there. The "shoved-in" blade is not efficient like the Urban leaf. Not pointy enough for pokey work, and not enough edge for serious slicing. I keep mine not just for the steel, but for that job it was designed for. Haven't found it yet...

I took off a wee bit of the spine on mine and now it's got point. Darn cute knife...

Loved my Squeak which was the reason I got an Urban but since my first Urban I haven't used the Squeak much.
(preferred the bigger and pointier blade on the Urban)
(very different from the Manbug/Ladybug though, for me much more useful due to more handle) (and a clip)
Dragonfly will also always be a great small but very useful blade.

Thank you guys. I just ordered a dragonfly 2 from knife Center as well. Came here looking for advice on the Squeak and left with both a manbug AND dragonfly 2!

Only on this forum does this happen!

The DF2 works way bigger than it is. I think you've made the far better choice.

I agree with Wrdwrght - the DF2 punches way above its weight. The Manbug and Squeak and Urban are all fine knives - but I find myself carrying a DragonFly almost every day.

I also have the Urban which is a great knife, but prefer the Squeak which reminds of the Co-Pilot, both are great knives. I also bought it them cause they're made in Italy. Gary
