Massod Ayoob Folder

#1

Post by SpydercoKnut »

I used it for the very first time to open a box and it performed like a champ. I was sort of hesitant to use it as a cutter because most MBC knives aren't meant for everyday cutting. Anybody use a Massod for everyday use and how does it perform? Is it a bear to sharpen or not? Thanks for reading my forum!!

I love my Ayoob PE (#692), but it doesn't see much carry. I'm sure that it would perform with ease in everyday cutting, and with the VG10 steel it would be easy to sharpen and maintain.

As far as most of the MBC knives not being suitable for everyday cutting, I would have to disagree. Due to the higher standards of lock strength that the MBC s have, I wouldn't hesitate for a second to use them for serious cutting chores. But that's only my opinion.

I use a traditional blade for everyday cutting, the Ayoob tends to scare people.

KBR, nice sheath. It looks like the knife is mounted butt-end in. If that's the case, then how do you like the draw with the knife neck-carried? Do you deploy (and open) the knife using a reverse grip?

SpydercoKnut, notice that the Ayoob's profile is pretty near that of the Catcherman. If MBC use is not important to you, you'll find that the Ayoob is also great for cutting bait and cleaning fish--or slicing pizza if the fish are not biting. (Oh yeah, wipe the blade clean first).

If you purchased the knife primarily for SD use, then you should keep it sharp at all times and try not to use it very much for utility purposes.

toothed,
Yep, the Ayoob goes in the sheath butt end first, and because of the tight fit, the draw sometimes required both hands. I don't/didn't carry the Ayoob for EDC, just kept it at home in the box. I say "didn't" because I just recently traded the Ayoob for a Starmate PE.

Hi Fellows,

And I'm the lucky one who got it! Man, do I like the Ayoob! Thanks for the great trade, KBR.

I just finished using this knife to cut up an orange into sections for my son, and an apple into pieces, then peel them for my daughter. The Ayoob works amazingly well for this task. It is very comfortable with it's angled blade - very ergonomic. I think I may have just found my new favorite portable food preparation knife.

The neck sheath works great. I find that if you pull the knife in the direction of the curve of the handle while holding the sheath with the other hand when withdrawing it, it comes out easily...yet it is tight enough that it would never fall out on it's own.

The Ayoob PE (#692) moves on
I'm finding it interesting how you can track a knife on the forums when it is a # one.

I remember back when I use to hold the Ayoob PE (#692)in my hand

Jeff/1911,
Enjoy your Ayoob and if someday you want to trade or sell it let me know

John,

It was yours, was it? I also think it's neat to track the numbered Spydies...

I sure do like Ayoob #692, and I'll certainly let you know if I decide to trade it in the future. For now anyway, it has found a very good home.

John,

Did you have the neck sheath made for it? If so, who is the maker...is it a Mike Shastre creation? It sure is nice.

Thanks, Jeff.

Hi Jeff/1911,

I bought the knife and sheath from Kodiak PA.
It was my first Spydie

He told me about the sheath, but I don't recall anymore who made it.

I never used the sheath, but yes it is very nice.

I don't know what it is about that knife as I never really used it much.
That is why I decided to trade it. Now everytime I see a post about the Ayoob PE (#692)I kind of wish I would have kept it.

I'm glad to hear it has a good home and that you enjoy using it.

I can still hear the snap it makes when you open it. I'm I sick or what?

The Massad Ayoob....I use it everyday, it's one of my favorite EDCs!

- It cuts like a demon
- Rides in a pants-pocket IMO better than any other mid-sized to large knife (this is a girl thing I've posted about before. Our pants-pockets are never cut as deeply as men's clothing for some odd reason and the curved handle on the Ayoob stays put in a pocket while you sit).
- Easy to sharpen.
- Fluid, quick open/close.

Here's a thought to chew on...whatever knife you choose to carry in an MBC capacity should -IMHO- be one that you feel amazingly comfortable with. You should be so familiar with its operation and capabilities that you could open/close/use left and right hand/cut/retrieve with your eyes closed, in the dark, with freezing and numb hands...blah..blah you get it. Repetitive carrying builds habit. A good and necessary thing for an MBC knife! MBC models make great EDCs.

Okay I'll get off my soap box now.

Joyce, you never cease to amaze me. Too bad more women don't have the same mindset about knives as you do. You go girl!

Btw, before you ask, this week my EDC is a plain-edged, G-10 Police.

Joyce,

I couldn't agree more, about both the comfortable carry and use of the Ayoob and also the importance of a "comfortable" knife for reliability when it counts.

I can't get over what a wonderful "food knife" the Ayoob makes. As I mentioned, I've found it works beautifully for paring fruit, thanks to it's slender and sharp blade.

Best wishes, Jeff/1911.

During training with Mas last year he used his for extracting a stuck shotgun shell out of a shotgun, now that is confidence in a knife.
