Sage 1, 3 or 5? What would you choose?

#1

Post by ryguy76 »

I am likely going to buy a Sage as my next purchase and am wondering which version I should get.

I have two liner lock knives, so I am thinking that I'd like a different lock, something that I don't have.

I am thinking I should wait for the Sage 5 as the compression lock seems to be very well received on the Para Military etc.

Just wondering if there is a solid reason to go with the Sage 1 or 3 for a reason that may be unrelated to locking mechanisms, barring aesthetic differences.

I prefer the look of the 5 over 3, with the exception that I like the closed back more, I think. I don't love the look of the axis lock on the side of the knife, but that's not a biggie.

Thoughts?

Why not the Sage 2?

Of those that you've listed, I think my choice would be the 5 but it hasn't been released yet. The reason being the compression lock is my favorite. I have all of the other models and love them all. The 1 and 2 probably get the most pocket time with the 2 edging out the 1 most of the time because I kinda have a thing for titanium. The 3 gets carried a little but it is slightly wider in the pocket which I don't like. The 4 isn't carried at all. Good luck with your decision. :spyder:

The Sage 3 has some of the smoothest action of any knife Spyderco makes.

I would probably choose the Sage 1,2, or 5. While the 3 is perhaps the smoothest opening Spydie I have, I prefer the liner lock, frame lock or compression lock. All are great knives and you can't go wrong with any. If the knife is going to be used where there is dirt, blood or other contaminates I would recommend the Sage 1 or 2 for ease of cleaning.

If you have liner locks, try out the compression lock. It's very durable and easy to operate.

Chocolate, strawberry or vanilla. The choice is up to you, Which lock do you prefer? I would take the 3 or the 5 myself as liner locks are not my favorite. I own the 2,3 and 4 and will pick up the 5. I may pick up the 1 someday but it isn't high on my list personally.

Throw some numbers in a hat and pick. I have the 1, 2, & 3. I carry the 1 & 2 the most by far. I'll probably end up getting the 5 just to have one. Wouldn't mind finding a 4 but I'm a little late to the dance to find one at a reasonable price.

I'd been trying to decide between 1 and 2, because I prefer those locks to the BAL. Not that I don't want a 3, it's just deciding the order of purchase. But as soon as I saw the 5, I wanted that one first. I really like the compression lock, and I really like the CF handles. I handled one at Blade, and it's fantastic. I like the CF finish better than the Sage 1, and I think it's actually full CF instead of a laminate. I'm not sure, and the person I asked at the booth wasn't sure either. It's beautiful either way. For me, Sage 5. Then probably the 2 since I'd already bought a CF Sage at that point. :p

I don't know about the Sage 5 you handled at Blade but the 2016 mid-year catalog lists the scales as being CF/G10 laminate.

I'll always take a hand-neutral lock over a handed one, so Sage 3 for me. And, strange as it feels to say it, preferably the blue G10 version because the weird pattern cut into the CF version brings back memories of argyle socks and sweaters, and I've never been a fan. :o

Haha. I've never cared for the CF pattern on the Sage 3 either. Never could put my finger on why, but now that you brought up argyle socks, that is stuck in my head. Now I think I like it even less. :D

A friend that got me into Spyderco knives said the CF pattern on the Sage 3 looks like a bad Bill Cosby sweater. :D I bought a CF Sage 3 mostly because I wanted to see what the BA lock was like and I got a good deal. While I do appreciate that they used a different CF pattern, I have to admit that I don't really care for it. If I can find a blue one I might consider trading up but I'm also not really sure that blue they use is an upgrade.

The sage 3 is one of the finest production knives out there! I have a couple of the "smurph Blues" and love them. Super smoooooth!!!!, can't wait for the Sage 5 with the compression lock!!! Bottom line Sage 3 or 5 In my humble opinion.
