The Stretch is my absolute favorite large Spyderco folder and I've had one version or another of it in my pocket almost every day since it first came out in November of 2004. :)

Super Blue. Its a nice steel, both hard and tough, an unusual combination. Must be the low carbide and very high carbon.

Prior to this my carry was a ZDP-189 Endura. The Stretch seems like an improved Endura, stockier with the larger tang and less gangly. I love ZDP-189 but you do have to be careful with it.

Does anyone know if the ZDP version of the Green FRN Stretch uses a laminate or solid steel? This is one case where
I am interested in a laminate.

The green frn Stretch in ZDP has a solid blade.

As BFK noted, the green FRN Stretch is solid ZDP, as are all the other ZDP versions of the Stretch and all the other ZDP models made by G. Sakai (Delica, Endura, etc). If you want laminated ZDP, you'll have to go with one of the models made by Moki (Jess Horn Lightweight, burgundy FRN Calypso Jr. Caly 3, Caly 3.5)

I just put an order in for a VG10 stretch. I currently dont own any knives in VG10. Im thinking about investing in a ZDP delica next..

We might try it. Sales were not very brisk with the Stretch. We've been trying to figure out why as being between the Endura (which is now a large knife) and the Delica, we thought it would be better. The tentative conclusion reached was; the general market doesn't like finger-choils and prefers the straight spine.

I've considered designing a choil-less straight spine version as a test, probably in slab construction first? I did that with the Raven and the upcoming "Polestar". But there I just got rid of the finger-choil and left the blade the same.

Wow bearfacedkiller that collection is awesome.. As far as what Sal mentioned, I cant believe that people dont typically go for finger-choils.. I love having that option on a knife.. Dont ask me why or how but the Stretch model seemed to fly under my radar, but once I saw it I knew i needed one.

Got my first Stretch in the mail yesterday, in HAP40. It's my second Spyderco, and as a user it feels just about perfect in the hand, with or without the choil. It did look funky to me in pictures - in person it looks much better than in images. I'm having trouble imagining a straight-spine Stretch, though. By that, do you mean no hump in the blade, or a profile more like the Endura or Delica?

I love 50/50 choils, but I have definitely gained an appreciation for designs like the Tenacious and Nilakka that squeeze in as much edge as possible. One of my favorite details on the Nilakka is how there's almost no flat tang sticking out from the handle at all. The deciding factor for me is how the handle is designed and how close it allows your index finger to get to the blade. If you could redesign the Stretch so that the index finger is still relatively close to the edge, and the edge/grind come all the way back to the handle like the Tenacious, I think you'd have a winner. The only catch with that would be the Stretch being a back lock, so I guess you can only get the edge back so far. It would be easier with a liner lock but then you're getting further and further away from what the Stretch is and into a whole new knife design.

What can I say, Sal. Guess I'm the odd man out. I prefer 50/50 choils and decently stainless steels. Heck I'd be happy with AUS-8 or GIN-1 as an alternative to ZDP-189. I may need to start stockpiling VG-10 FRN Stretches for future mods.

As for a Stretch without a 50/50 choil, I can understand you have to build for the market that exists but, while it would be "truer" to it's Hunter ancestry, it would be of no interest to me. OTOH, I'd be happy to see a straight spine version of the Stretch 2.
