WHEN DID YOU ?

Post by ken »

When did you guys & gals buy your first spydie?

&

Which model did you get?

&

How much did you give up for this piece of workmanship?

&

Where did you get it?

And lastly

Why the spydie? But only reason-please-I know it's tough!

i recieved my first spidie 6 months ago. it was a VG-10 endura. got one cause i knew that they were quality knives and most of the other guys at the summer camp i worked at had them. bought it through the gal that does purchasing for the camp and got it for 40 bucks. that knife became like an extension of my hand. i lost it a few months back sadly... but i'll probably get another one this summer. good question ken.

I bought my first spydie(s) about 1992 at a local PX. Picked up an Endura, Dragonfly, and ladybug; all FRN, all SE. I think I paid around $30 for the Endura, something in the twenties for the Dragonfly, and even less for the ladybug. Actually bought the Endura, went out to my car, opened the blister pak with my Kershaw and sat and played with it for about 10 minutes. Got out of the car, went back in and bought the other two. Must have been something about Baby Bear, Mama Bear, and Papa bear. They just seemed so right together.
Still have the Dragonfly, gave the Endura to my Stepson, and lost the ladybug somewhere.

Edit - and why? Had the Kershaw for about two years, (still have it actually; it has long since been retired) and wanted something lightweight. Saw the Endura on a rack and it looked really intriguing, so I bought it. Had it ten minutes and was addicted.

It was a "Q" in 1996, I gave $26.99 for it, at Nashville Sports in Nashville(no longer in Buis.). Because, this knife was small user friendly, sharpe w/high quality F&F. RKBA!

Spyderco PE Q (with Spyderco logo), many years ago (9 years ago maybe?), paid around 70 bux for it, bought it at a knife shop in Cielovista Mall in El Paso, TX (I don't even think the knife shop exists anymore), and I got it because it was the coolest thing on display. Also, it was a "gift" from my boyfriend (now husband) but I got to choose it. Those are the best ones.

I have been "bugged" since then.

Well, I bought my first Spyderco knife a month ago. It's the Jester and I ordered it from Boker Solingen. Paid about 38 Eur. Actually Hannibal Lecter introduced me to Spyderco. In the book, Thomas Harris was describing Dr. Lecter losing his Harpy in Italy and buying a Civilian in the US, and os as I am a knifanatic since I was a child, I looked them up (the Harpy and the Civilian) in the Internet, and guess what I found..... SPYDERCO

I got mine in Spring 2002. It's a Native PE FRN, in CPM440V. I got it from a knife dealer I like at a local gunshow. He generally cuts me pretty good deals, and I think it was $40 out the door.

I first heard of Spyderco in Dick Marcinko's "Rogue Warrior" books, and figured if it was good enough for Seal Team 6 then I just had to have one!

It was October 97 I think. My first was a FRN Jess Horn I gave about $60 for at SMKW store, I got it because it just felt right in my hand and I didn't think I wanted anything bigger. I now carry an Endura and patiently waiting (ya right) for the S30V Military. I had heard about and fondeled several Spydies, but I just couldn't bring myself to spend "that kind of money" on a knife. The answer to that dilema was Christmas money, been hooked ever since.

a stainless steel standard. traded for it at a gun show in colorado, around $ 25.00-$ 35.00 i think. it was full serrated, at the time i didn,t like that so i removed the serrations, i still have it, tho it,s been retired for years. i don,t remove serrations any more. now you can get them any way you want them. (got it in 1983 or 84)

? what does it all mean ?

Civilian. Alu & kraton. I guess it was about 4 years ago. Was just browsing the local knifestore, and it stood out as one of the most aggressive designs i had ever seen. Bought it immediately, and have carried it from time to time when life seemed unsafe. Baaad knife. Due to outrageous Norwegian taxes and prices in general, I guess the knife cost me about $200 US. Silly ... My users have all been somewhat cheaper locally made knives, as well as stuff like BM ACFK, assorted SOG and Cold Steel. Somehow a MadDog ATAKII found its way into my home, when I first decided to buy from overseas I figured I might just as well splurge a bit.

Anyway, Rescue Jr, Delica and Military on order from Linda. I guess they will be my first spydies to see some real use. These three seem to cover a whole lot of usage areas. Rescue is somewhat sheeple friendly, and will relax the local cops as it is not very stab-friendly. Delica seems very suited for EDC, and the Millie looks like it would suit my backpack rather well on sunday hikes.

Aug 99
C11PBK Delica PE FRN
about $90-95CAN after taxes.

bought b/c I had the cash there, and wanted what I could get with the 120 I went in with. Long trip, lots fo questions and handling, and left with a knife with "an odd hole" in the blade. Next purchase? Tufram Cricket SE March 00, 110 after taxes.

That was #1 in Aug 99... just over 3 yrs later, I've bought close to 20, with 6 going out as gifts, and have 2 more on order from Linda waiting on payment.

1991 or 1992, SE Dragonfly ( had to

go DEEEEP in my parsimonious pocket )

as I couldn't get the "hang" of the

Ladybug ( my long fingers could barely

get the "hang" of the Dragonfly) so

that was my first. I next got a SE

Merlin in 1996 when they still had the

plastic clip, then in 1998 MY TRUE LOVE

the SE cricket The question

remains....which Spydie will be my

First sydie bought 1994: Black FRN Rescue (w/ plastic clip). I think I paid $50-60 at a knife and tool shop (I think) in Maine (near Bangor).

I wanted something lightweight that I could carry clipped to my pocket and open one-handed. The sheepsfoot design appealed to me because it didn't look threatening to others (most people thought it was a small saw).

It was this past August of 2002 in a touristy type shop called Jekyll & Hyde in Bar Harbor, Maine. They had a nice selection and after handling (fondling) many versions of Spyderco and Benchmark etc., the SS VG-10 Police CE was the one that spoke to me. Paid $100 for the flawless display model. I carried it every day for a month until I found this site. Now I have over 2 dozen little Spydie brothers and sisters and that Police lives quite a pampered life.

Jeffrey,

Welcome aboard!! You're off to a good start on a lifetime of addiction. Good to see Luxembourg represented!

First Spydie was an FRN SE Endura bought at the Wright-Patterson AFB Base Exchange in 1994, after a fellow Cardboard Lethal Interdiction Team, sharpshooter (yeah, they were just silhoute targets but our acronym was catchy) introduced me to them. Many more of the sharp little creatures later I'm still soilidly in the -corner. Latest is an ivory Spyderkey due in soon.
