Sharpening Aqua Salt Fixed Blade Dive Knife

#1

Post by 닭다리 »

Has any owners of Aqua Salt Fixed Blade Dive Knife found the knife to be bit harder to sharpen? I use Spydercos Sharpmaker, and I found that applying more amount of strokes at 20 degree angle per side helped getting the edge sharper. Anyone else use 15 degrees per side instead of the 20? Also, have you tried to sharpen this knife using the diamond embedded rod fro. Spyderco on the sharpmaker?

Anyway, I just wanted to see if anyone else had similar issue or got a story to share thats related to the Aqua Salt Fixed Blade Dive Knife~

I'd try coloring the edge with a marker and see if you are actually hitting the edge. If you do you will see shiny metal at the edge. It you don't hit the edge you have to sharpen for a while before seeing any improvement and coarse stones get you there faster.
20 degrees should hit the edge faster than 15. In my experience H1 sharpens up quickly and easily.

Yeah. I totally spaced out the marker method (which is dumb of me since I use to always mark the edges on my knives). I will definitely do this tonight after work. I did sharpen it yesterday, but the edge seem to have gotten dull already. Maybe I just haven't used it often enough for the H1 steel to get harder. I know that over time, H1 steel will get harder and hold the edge longer. It could just be that. But I was surprised at the dull edge today. I am having harder time doing paper cut test method on the Aqua. Just as I thought I got it down (solved the issue) I am back to the beginning.

Thanks for the reminder. I shall give it a go tonight.

H1 holds a decent edge so it should do ok. Work hardening isn't very noticeable with normal sharpening, even with my old ones (1. gen) I'm not sure there is any difference. If you had a poorly shaped edge it will go dull quickly.

I used the diamond tapered rod and a marking tool on the large serrations. Light strokes. Worked good for me.

I reprofiled mine to 10 degrees per side with DMT diamond stones, then put a ~15 degree per side micro bevel on Spyderco Ultrafine bench stone. cuts great!
