Picking my Spydie

#1

Post by mapleleaf »

Help! I'm about to make my first Spyderco purchase from some old and new favorites. I 've narrowed down my want list to an original NIB Mariner, a mid-80s Diver or a newer Police and Native 11. Any suggestions as to which one's the best bet as a multi-use keeper?

Howdy Mapleleaf! Welcome to <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>Land! <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

I'd go after the Police, of the list you gave. The old Mariner and Diver are both great knives, but they're tough to repalce should they become lost.

The police is likely the best cutter on the list, a 4" blade can take care of most anything you'll ever ask.

Of course, there's always the "Budget Police", the Endura. A bit smaller, with FRN grips, this <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> can take anything anyone can try, and keeps coming.

Never underestimate the impossible.

Still looking at the SS Police myself, figure the SS and thin profile would make a sweet boot carry.

Of your choices, I'd say the C07 Police. The Native II (SS) has a poor steel in it(compared to the FRN), and the C07 is one of the few where the SS has a good steel in it.

Greetings Mapleleaf & welcome to the forums!
From your list of choices I would say the Native (for a multi-use carry). But, I would recommend the serrated lightweight Native made in Golden. It has the new CPM S30V steel in it.

I would have to disagree about the poor steel in the Native SS.I can get an extremely sharp edge on it and its holds it.Can't asked for much more than that.

Why not "go against the grain" and get a FRN Endura? With that you get a lightweight folder with a (very slightly under) 4 inch blade made out of the excellent VG-10 steel, and an ambidextrious pocket-clip.

To be fair, the one and only Endura I've owned was the toughest folder I've ever heard of.

Welcome aboard, Mapleleaf. I used to like SS models myself till I discovered the benefits of the Lightweight models (FRN and G10).
If you are searching for a knife as EDC (every day carry), I greatly recommend one of those. The steel is also better. There is the FRN (or G10) Native and also the G10 Police from your wish list. Also, if you want a smaller knife, that might be the Delica or the Calypso jr.
But any model you pick, be sure that will satisfy your needs, as long as it is a spidie <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Hi MapleLeaf, fellow Canuck!

I'd choose the Police model, and with the current VG-10 steel if you can get it. These knives are very hard to beat.

Best wishes, Jeff/1911.
