Remember the good old sabre grind Delica ?
Remember the good old sabre grind Delica ?
After talking to a guy who carried only one saber grind Delica 4 in the last six years or so I became nostalgic.I wiped the dust off my good old SG Delica companion and decided to pay retribution :) I gave it a spa and than I clamped it on my WE and decided to put a 17 dps (no micro bevel) edge on the blade and I tell you: now it cuts ! I than realized that inspite of the new FFG wave, I still have a heart for my old SG Delica.Maybe it's not the best slicer in the world but the blade looks better and it gives me a feeling of confidence.I only wish they release a Delica/Endura in hollow grind again. I am curious if there is anyone out there who prefers to carry a SG Delica/Endura instead of a FFG one.

Remember it? I carry it for work every day!
It was my first Spyderco, bought for its OHO and strong tip (so that I can probe potentially rotten timbers without letting go with my other hand).

Not my cup of tea, but for those that like them, both the saber ground FRN Delica 4 and the hollow ground SS Delica 4 are still in production and readily available.

I never really warmed up to the saber grind Delicas. But, the FFG Delicas are truly fine and I carry one more than any other knife that I own.

Best thing you can do with one is scandi grind it with a micro bevel. THEN it'll cut
Re: Remember the good old sabre grind Delica ?
A big +1 on this! However, my Delica collection has recently expanded to include some saber ground models, and I can't imagine I'll like them less because of it.Doc Dan wrote:I never really warmed up to the saber grind Delicas. I like both the flat and sabre grinds. I would also like the option of the hollow grind with an FRN handle.

I definitely prefer the FFG, but to each their own.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.
Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

Re: Remember the good old sabre grind Delica ?
Saber grind in fully serrated in my preferred work knife.
Re: Remember the good old sabre grind Delica ?
I don't have a strong opinion on FFG vs. sabre or hollow grind, but I did prefer the pointier tip on the Delica 3 to the blade shape of the current model. I assume this was probably changed due to the Delica being an entry-level model and more likely to be abused/broken by inexperienced knife owners. In any case, I definitely regret selling my old carbon fiber model years ago!
Re: Remember the good old sabre grind Delica ?
I like sabre grind but on the Delica it just comes out feeling like a screwdriver. Sturdy geometry but not performance geometry. And that's ok, it's Accord of pocket knives. It's made for anyone.
Re: Remember the good old sabre grind Delica ?
The FFG made such a performance difference that I gave my ZDP saber ground Delica a full convex zero grind by hand. Like Evil D said, now it'll cut!
Re: Remember the good old sabre grind Delica ?
FFG is a better cutting tool from the factory for sure but I do have a soft spot for the saber ground delicas.
I have a few variations in saber grind (PE, CE and SE ZDP189) but the CE one was used from beggining to end when building a 1000 sq foot stone patio (opening bags of aggregate, scoring wood markers, leveling lines and anything else that came up) that other than a few scratches and a good sharpening shows almost no signs of wear. A FFG would have handled that job but it was nice to not worry about anything with the saber grind.

Yep,
I carry two of them, both ZDP, one at work and one at home. I had some FFG variants, bu to me, the SG just "feels" better. Coming from puukko-enviroment I don't find SG ackward or thick in any way.

Re: Remember the good old sabre grind Delica ?
Edc a CE one all the time. FFG is slicey but I feel SG is beefier for warehouse tasks. Full disclosure: I own both of them

Re: Remember the good old sabre grind Delica ?
I hope Spyderco does keep producing the sabre grind. Both SG and FFG (Endura and Delica) are in my EDC rotation. I use the SG for tougher jobs because of the robust tip and it sharpens up very well for me.

Same here, fully serrated endura 4 is a beast of work knife.JAfromMN wrote:Saber grind in fully serrated in my preferred work knife.

Re: Remember the good old sabre grind Delica ?
My Gen1 clipit is standard grind and so is the Gen4.....it may not slice cardboard with the ease of the new flat grind but the world is not made out of cardboard and there are far tougher things to cut or even pry against at times on a working knife....it is a hard use knife that will handle far more really bearing down on it jobs, and the inevitable twists when something slips...i do not know where all these blanket performance statements are coming from but they obviously are uses geared towards tasks in which a flat grind will shine.....i am sure i could equally come up with some heavy pushing or pulling cut tests which would break a nice piece out of that thinner blade....it all depends on the job at hand and the standard grind never has left me wishing for a thinner knife, but on tough jobs such as hose, maybe fully serrated instead of partial
