Spydierench--Opinions??

#1

Post by KBR »

I've been thinking of buying/trading for another multitool for non-work EDC (my SOG TiNi Powerlock has been getting pretty cumbersome at times) and I've been thinking about getting a Rench with the SpyderEdge blade. Any of you that carry one for EDC, what are your opinions on this tool?

Thanks in advance.

Still gotta get around to picking one up for myself...

put a t-6, t-?(whatever the pivot is on the salsa and millie... I have it, but can't find #), Phillips(small) and Phillips(large)...

would give you the ultimate maintancence tool.

I personally don't own one... and that's because I don't think it would be of any benefit to me I played with one pretty extensively for a while, and find it difficult to use for many of the tools other than the knife.

If you need to carry only one knife/tool on your person... and you use a knife a lot, then the Spyderwrench will serve you well. I don't go anywhere that I can't carry at least my two main knives and my leatherman supertool, so the Spyderwrench just doesn't add anything for me. I usually carry more than those 3 items, but they are the bare minimum. YMMV

It's a good EDC, you will notice the weight is a little more than a folder in the pocket (7 oz.), say as compared to a Military.

Ingenious design. Mine is with a SE blade, and is very sharp, and blade cuts thru everything.

This is almost the ultimate gadget tool. I work with a no. of engineers, and every one who has seen and handled the tools loves it!

The files have proved useful on a no. of occassions. I like the extended reach aspect of screwdriver (which actually works in real use). The pliers are more channel lock type, which allows for a better non-damaging grip on nuts/bolts, as compared to most pliers on multi-tools ( you're gripping the flat sides of bolt/nut).

I would say the crescent wrench isn't for heavy duty work, but the disconnect aspect of this tool allow for crescent wrench in one hand, and screwdriver in other, which allows you to tighten applications that require both a screwdriver and wrench. You would need two other multi-tools to do the same job.

I like it. It does work for different types of jobs than the other multi-tools. It would be a good addition, you will be happy with it.

I've got one in my collection, but don't carry it. I prefer needlenose pliers and I hate having to "assemble" the screwdrivers. The 'Rench would've been better if the bits were used in a fold-out holder, ala Victorinox Cybertool. For EDC, I use a Leatherman Juice KF4(the yellow one) or one of my Swiss Army knives(course, I never go anywhere w/out my Calypso Jr :-}).

I dunno...From looking at the SpydeRench in photos, it looks too complicated for my feeble mind to put back together once it was taken apart.

Once you get one, give to your friends, especially any engineers, and let them try and figure out how to take it apart, and put back together.

It's quite amusing.

Actually they get sent back in pieces all the time by people who can't figure it out. I figured it out at the last Blade knife show, and suprised the guy from NY that was working the SpyderCounter.

Knife Knut on a shoestring budget. RKBA
