Farid releases K2 customs in Rex 121

#1

Post by The Mastiff »

I wanted to make note of, and congratulate Farid on his release of the Rex 121 line of K2's. They are at one of the major, well known to this forums members knife stores that I have done business with for almost 15 years now. . They are not going to last long IMO.

Not a bad price at all considering everything from design and materials to importation from the UK costs.

Wish I could afford one. Maybe some day eh? In the mean time good work Farid. Keep us Steel junkies on our toes. :)

I see these are the "Mini" K2's, with 3.8 inch blade, 5.6 oz weight.

Interesting: Patent pending "almost round" opening hole...

I like the industrial and bronze-ti look, but it doesn't tick all my design preferences, and is way above my max price limit anyway. :)

A mini K2 is something I would be really interested in if it was made by Spyderco, the custom is way too expensive for me.

Was that Farid in the BladeHQ intro's holding a giant K2?

Just to be clear all the new 4" K2's are D3 tool steel blades right now and not REX 121 as mentioned on the web site, also these are full hand made custom knives and not mid tech, I do not yet make mid tech.

As Sal said in edgematters.uk

" Opens and closes and locks.
Two hands on all applications.
at 10 lbs +, it would probably require special clothing to wear it.

Congrats, Farid.

So, the Spyderco model is a full on production and the ones you make are full custom, but there is no one producing the in between mid techs yet?

Mid Techs are open to abuse in a lot of things... :(

Farid is a believer in total authorship... :)

Does that even have a sensible meaning? There are lots of makers that :

-make identical blades in large batches
-outsource heat treating
-use laser cut/WJ blanks
-have scales rough cut
-use all mass production fasteners
-have an apprentice/helper do basic assembly
-have someone else sharpen them

I don't even understand what custom is supposed to mean given how people who do many of the above use it, let alone mid-tech.

The K2 is a super simple construction anyway, even if I were to make it with simpler materials other than say titanium the 'labour' would still be the same, so what are we gaining here ? I still have to spend the same amount of time building the knife regardless of if it is with titanium handle or say 17/4PH 'and get paid less for it' it doesn't make any sense.

I am not saying I will never offer mid tech but it needs careful thinking.
