Accident Spydies

#1

Post by skywalker1 »

I recently heard about the accident batch of Techno' s in S30V and I' ve been wondering about whether you guys know of any other "accident" Spydercos in existence?
I' m thinking about something like typos or a missing logo etc.

The only out-and-out typo I can remember was a batch of clips back in the late 80's or early 90's where "foreign" was misspelled in the patent data. Many models shared the same clips, so that boo-boo was spread across quite a few of them. There have also been a few cases where knives made in Golden have left the factory "sterile", but all of those have involved very small quantities. I also have an FRN Stretch with a ZDP-189 blade that's labeled as VG-10, but that was done intentionally.

You know, it is amazing that there have only been a few select "boo-boos" in Spyderco's history--especially in light of the high volume of knives they manufacture. Quite a testament to their QC department. ;)

Deacon, could you elaborate a bit on the intentionally miss-labeled blade?
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

As did that one. :o

Sure.

Before production of the FRN Stretch began, Sal wanted a couple examples each of the blue FRN ZDP-189 and black FRN VG-10 versions to display at shows. The ZDP version was easy, because the FRN version would share the blade already being used in the then current CF/ZDP-189 version. However, no VG-10 blades existed and the maker was not ready to produce them, so they "faked it". I wound up receiving the one in the photo below as a gift from Sal.

There was a little mix up with the Logos on the first couple of runs of Gayle Bradley's.

Also, the Para 2 was designed by Sal and Eric and the first few batches had one and not the other's logo on the blades.

I wouldn't consider it a typo, but the rarity of the Pride Integrity Guts Police model because of controversy over some peoples' opinions... is kind of interesting.

The first few runs of Chaparral being S30V (more like the first year) because of short supply of XHP is more in the line of the Techno issue.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the CTS-B75P Mule supposed to be a different steel, but there was a mix-up at the foundry?

edit: Correction, the CTS-BD30 Manix 2 sprint was originally slated to be CTS-B75, but apparently a mis-marked batch of steel was sent so Spyderco used the BD30 that showed up instead.
dapagco wrote:We will be shipping the Manix2 Sprint Run over the next couple of weeks. Unfortunately, there has been a mix-up on the blade steel and Spyderco made the decision to continue with the Sprint Run and produce the knife using Carpenter's CTS-BD30P Blade Steel instead of Carpenter's CTS-B75P steel originally planned.

We are still working with Carpenter to produce something with their CTS-B75P steel and we will keep you informed once we finalize more details.

I bought a yellow Salt 1 from a reputable dealer, and it came with a yellow Tasman Salt handle. They have identical handles except for the name on the logo. :)

I have a sterile Phoenix. It has the Spyderbug etch, but has no steel engraving or the Spyderco script.

Could you explain what happened there?
Thanks for the responses guys, I think this is very interesting and for some reason these knives seem very desirable to me :D

My first run Gayle Bradley didn't have his logo, just the Spyderco bug.

IIRC, the maker's logo on the Hungarian models were also accidentally placed upside-down.

I don't know if this counts but I have a sprint run Persistence that had the spider logo on the clip double engraved.
