I saw this in the latest season of the Walking Dead, pretty cool trick. I'm guessing you could also use a bit of aluminium foil?

I'm not sure about that...I think part of why the gum wrapper goes up is because it's foil and paper...I don't think foil alone would catch fire like that. Maybe cut some up and give it a try and let us know.

Yeah I tried it when I was cooking dinner earlier and it didn't work but the battery and the ends of the battery got really hot. I've had a few beers so I'll try it again tomorrow with a bit of paper twisted through.

I've seen that done with a 9v battery and a gum wrapper. The wrapper has to have some foil. The Scoutmaster of our troop ended up buying about 8 packs of gum trying to find some that weren't completely paper or plastic for the demonstration.

Yeah I certainly wouldn't rely on it as a fire source, but if I were gonna throw a pack of gum in a BOB then I'd at least try for foiled wrappers.

I found this video
A problem I had was cutting the foil thin enough in the middle. The foil would break when I started to bend it. In a survival situation when you are cold, wet and your hands are trembling then I don't think you can rely on this. Better to keep the old fire-steel and some matches in your survival kit as well as a chap stick.

I keep gum in the homemade MRE in my BOB. And I have spare batteries for my BOB flashlight too.
(Though just 2 days ago, I found a way to carry 20 of the best stormproof matches in a case that isn't laughable thick and sharp like the standard one used to carry 25 of the same matches.)
