Patents

I'm truly stunned. Just take a look at innovations created and patented by Sal himself versus another company which seems to look for innovations created by someone else but not patented. It looks like they take someone else's creation or fruitful idea and then take that and try to slap a patent on it themselves, probably cutting out the original innovator. Is this what I'm seeing? Sintered/ cast steel knives, axis locks, composite blades, flippers, all thought of and brought to market by someone else and they have the nerve to try to slap a patent on it claiming it as their own? I'm all about shiny footprints, but seriously, take a look at these. Please tell me I'm wrong and that I'm not seeing what i think I'm seeing. Wow man, I'm honestly a little shocked the other company is like that. And this is just another reason to respect Sal and Spyderco. At least spyderco properly insources designers and gives credit where credit is due. Now I can't help but look at this other company like just another rip off artist on Aliexpress. Now I have to go about selling the knives I own from this other company.

Hi Bodog,

Patents are a very complicated endeavor with many paths. Many knife companies have many patents on many ideas. I believe they are likely legal or they wouldn't have gotten a patent. Some are broad, some are narrow, but I would not suggest that there is any wrongdoing.

Probably legal, but right? I can't remember off the top of my head who thought of cast steel knives, but I can't believe he'd be happy with this company throwing a patent on the process. Or Kit Carson being happy with this other company trying to patent his idea after its already well known that it's his idea. It must be tough trying to come up with brand new ideas year after year when your competitors take such a shady path. Legality aside, I've just completely given up on this other company. I'm more upset with myself for believing they were creating these ideas in house or and least in collaboration with some other designer with due credit given. Kudos sir, for walking the more difficult but more honest path. This is where you're a better man than me. If I owned a company and spent 30 years building it from the ground up, thinking, inventing, testing, working for and spending money for patent lawyers and, well, every other kind of lawyer, just to see my competition basically ripping off other guys and seeing them "earn" praise about those products, I don't think I could be quite as calm about it as you are. I guess after so many years of dealing with it, you have to accept that happens or just get out of business altogether. Again, kudos, Sal.

You ever thought about writing an autobiography?

Something interesting is that the company's patents you linked to (Kershaw) has actually collaborated with Spyderco and Sal:

Hey GoldenSpydie thanks a million for putting up that great pic of my all time favorite recurve and that being the Spyker model. I've wanted to see what it would be like to have a recurve in Spyderedge and the 2 I would want more than any would be the Spyker or the new ULIZE. Both of those would be beasts in Spyderedge I'm certain.

Hey "BODOG" if you really want to see something to appreciate and to give you an idea of Sal & Eric Glesser's Genius and how this great company got started you absolutely need to get a copy of "THE SPYDERCO STORY" by Kenneth Delavigne. That book shows a lot of the patents and innovations that got this company off and running as good as it is today. My hardcover copy of that great book is one of my "UNTOUCHABLES" >> in other words I wouldn't get rid of it for any reason.

I've wanted to see a sequel and/or followup to the Spyderco Story because a lot has transpired since that book was release in the late 90s/early 2000s. If you're a fan of Spyderco's great products that book will blow your mind. Spyderco has truly changed the way I look at cutlery all together>> and in a very good way I might add.
