I had to make some on the spot decisions, so I'm not really crazy about the result. Very ergonomic but the valleys I dug under the lockbar spot and pinky aren't perfectly symmetrical on each side yet, drives me crazy.
PS : bonus : https://imgur.com/a/g8Wjjcz
In the collection : Lots of different steels, in lots of different (and same) Spydercos.

Thanks Dan, I had a good time checking out the new photos in the Amalgam thread you added. I'm not really "back" yet though, life continues to be very busy -- new house and now I'm looking to pick up a 2nd job haha. Will try to post photos when I get the chance though!SaltyCaribbeanDfly wrote: ↑Wed Apr 05, 2023 6:02 amCool angle shot Embry looks like a lazer…only problem is I don’t know what it is ? Thanks Salty Yup, it is indeed the Amalgam, one of the best knives in Spyderco's lineup (in my opinion) Big, pretty lightweight, pretty to look at, enjoyable to flick open and closed because of the flipper tab, nice ergonomics. I highly recommend you handle one if you get the chance

Also as an aside: does anyone ever write off a particular knife because it just doesn’t look appealing in the website page. But then when someone takes a real life photo it’s like: ‘yeah, I really gotta get one of those.’

Re: Spyderco Photo of the Week Contest!
Funny story Foehammer, I almost wrote off the Amalgam at first because it looked real uninspiring in the website page, kind of "blobby" -- a big blob of steel for a blade, and a big blob of G-10 for a handle, not exciting compared to any number of other Spydies. But the Brouwer was cool looking, and the Amalgam had a similar blade, and I figured it might be cool to have sort of a matching set -- small Brouwer, big Amalgam. So I watched Nick Shabazz's Amalgam video to help decide. And seeing it from multiple angles, and what he said about the ergonomics, pushed it over the edge for me to "yeah, this is worth taking the risk, let's buy it and see."Foehammer wrote: ↑Wed Apr 05, 2023 4:37 pmDamnn, I may have to pick one of those up. And now the Amalgam is my favorite knife, and the Brouwer's ergonomics bothered me enough that I gave it away haha
I wonder if Spyderco might do better if they added additional photos to their site? Especially for the less immediately-inspiring models like the Amalgam... I'm sure there's loads of people here on the Forums who would be thrilled to offer their photos for Spyderco's use to help show off their favorite model.
In person, the "blobby" shape works very well for the Amalgam. Compared to something like the Police (which has an aggressive distal taper), the blade stock stays much thicker along the entire length which gives it a nice heft, but because the Amalgam's blade has that taller blobby shape it still manages to be quite thin behind the edge. Compared to the Police, I think it's better at chopping food in the kitchen, and spreading stuff on sandwiches.
You might enjoy the Amalgam photo thread: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=92837
Definitely try out the knife if you get the chance. I'd be interested to know what you think of it
Re: Spyderco Photo of the Week Contest!
i have a different reaction to the amalgam. to me, it looks like a really great bushcraft/outdoor folder, based on the blade shape and handle ergonomics. however, the fact that it's a flipper, riding on bearings, and has a compression lock means that it's far less ideal for those outdoor activities than i'd like. still a really great design though.

Ya that thread is very nice, thanks. After I get the Gb2 and customize it I’ll probably have to get an Amalgam.
