Long Awaited Grail Success: The C104 Kris!!

#1

Post by SpyderNut »

Hi guys,

My beautiful bride surprised me with a new Spydie for my birthday on Friday. (She had promised it “wouldn’t be an expensive one” because we just recently purchased a new home and are *trying* to watch our funds). I expected the new knife would be a DogTag Folder, but when I opened the gift and saw that it was the older style gray Spyderco box, I immediately knew I was in for a big surprise! This Kris is in mint condition. The pocket clip, Micarta scales, and bolsters are without blemish. It also still has the factory edge. I suspect it must have been a safe queen. ;) Now, I have been on a grail quest for a Kris for about the past five years, but I never seemed to find one that was (1) in NIB shape and (2) didn’t cost as much as a CRK. As a big fan of Ed Schempp’s work, the Kris will hold a special place in my collection. I am so tickled that she was able to find this knife! :D :) :D

As if that weren’t enough, she also blessed me with a new C188ALTI DogTag Folder!! BEST BIRTHDAY EVER! :D :D :D :D

Here are a few pictures to celebrate (I've included my Sprint Run Red Persian for comparison):

Hi Folks!

Awesome catch! :D

I think I never saw a Kriss in such a nice shape. Looks like a New Old Stock piece, hidden for years at highest top of the shelf.

Happy birthday, and congratulations on the Kris!

I really lucked out, and found an amazing deal on a LNIB Kris very early in my Spydie accumulating. Finding that "grail" Schempp is what then led me to acquire all the rest of the Schempp designed Spydercos. Enjoy!

Congrats on both snagging a beautiful bride as well as the Kris. I had also been searching for one for many years and finally managed to score a NIB specimen. Lacking a beautiful bride, I was forced to purchase the Kris myself. ;)

Awesome finds, both your lady and the knives! I'm still pining for my Kris, it was stolen from the local USPS sorting facility early this year after taking me a while to track down. My biggest loss of 2014. Keep yours close!!

It is indeed. :D Since the first time I laid eyes on one, I knew I'd *have* to have one. ;)

I think you may be right about that. From what I can tell, this knife has never been carried. Somebody treated it very well or perhaps it was sitting on a dusty shelf somewhere waiting to be found!

Thank you very much! :) Mr. Schempp's design work is simply amazing. Congrats on getting all of his designs! I have a few to go before I have the complete "set" (such as the Barong, Equilibrium, and a few others).

Yes indeed! Although the Sharpmaker is great for serrated edges, I will NOT be trying my hand on it with this blade!

Haha! If given a choice, I'll bet she'd rather have the Sims, though. ;) Thanks man!

Thank you, Kyle! I'm very fortunate (and lucky) to have such a sweetie. She spoils me rotten. :D I hope you might find a Spyderco-savvy beautiful bride someday too! :)

I'm sorry to hear that, man. :( That is not cool. I truly hope this will work itself out. Please let me know when you hear something.

Thank you! :) It has been on my radar for a very long time. I suppose you might call it my "Schempp Unicorn." ;) I carried it for the first time today while taking a walk with my wife. I had it clipped in the right-hand pocket of my khaki shorts. One thing I immediately noticed--this is a heavy knife! I suppose it might carry better in a pair of jeans. I probably won't carry it very often anyhow, since this is one that will only come out for special occasions. :D :D

The bolster design looks very close to that of the upcoming Schempp Bowie. I doubt I'll ever find a good condition Kris, but I'll definitely be grabbing the Bowie Folder. Great find though (Knife and wife)...my ex girlfriend thought my knife collection was weird at best and creepy at worst when all I had was my H1 Ladybug, my first Spyderco (FRN Native), and CF Chaparral. Serves me right for dating a closed minded city girl I suppose :P

Your a lucky guy. That was a very cool gift from your wife.

I love my Kris. It is one of those designs that most people don't understand until they hold it in their hand. Mine will never leave my possession until I'm dead, and yes I have had many offers from people wanting to buy it.;)

As others have said it is a tough knife to find in perfect condition because I believe most people that own them tend to like the unique design and actually carry them. Another added bonus is that you will now have bragging rights with your buddies because they probably will not have one, nor be able to find one;)

It was truly her loss, man. ;) Some folks never see the light--no matter how hard you try. :) You're right about the bolsters being very similar to the upcoming Bowie! There's just something very sexy about all those curves and graceful lines... Dang. That Ed Schempp is a genius!

True that, brother. I have a few Spydies that I would be loathe to part ways with--the new Kris is certainly one of them. I suppose another would be my G-10 Poliwog (also a gift from my wife :D ).

Congrats!!! That knife is at the top of my grail list too! Good job finding a woman that understands the spydie addiction, I too have found one and it is indeed a glorious thing!

Again, Congrats on the knife, I envy you!
