I've been a huge Brazil fan for years, so this is a great World Cup for me. Not only are they hosting, but they have a pretty killer team as well. I'll be rooting for them and think they have a decent chance of winning, even though there are some extremely talented squads (Germany, I'm keeping my eye on you).
Despite the chance of the U.S. team winning being very slim, I'll also be supporting them since they are my home country. I just hope they make it out of the first round.

We have had the riots, the last minute building works and the corruption allegations. J-Lo has stormed off from the opening ceremony due to artistic differences but finally the football/soccer will start in a few hours. Can Croatia overcome the host nation to win or will Brazil stake their claim to the trophy?

Well Brazil overcame Croatia 3-1 with a bit of luck on their side. Today we have 3 games, with the Spain vs. Netherlands game being a rematch of the 2010 final, should be a great match.

Well Mexico won 1-0 against Cameroon despite some dubious refereeing decisions. The Netherlands thrashed Spain 5-1 in revenge for losing the final 4 years ago and Chile beat Australia 3-1. Today the game between England and Italy is the stand out match, who will cope with the heat and humidity of Manaus better?

Well Colombia beat Greece 3-0, Uruguay surprisingly lost 3-1 to Costa Rica and England still have not managed to beat Italy in an international tournament losing 2-1. Ivory Coast overcame Japan 2-1 to end a great Saturday of football.

Yeah the US did very well to beat a good Ghana side and with Germany thrashing Portugal, the US team have a great chance to qualify for the knockout stages, where anything can happen. Usually being the host nation is the biggest advantage in the World Cup, only Brazil and Spain have won their World Cup's not hosting the tournament.US won. I am happy.
I think that Brazil has a great chance to get a Cup, but IIRC only once the host took the Cup. France. 1996 I think.
I am still not convinced that Brazil can win this tournament, so far Holland and Germany are looking really good and I'm looking forward to seeing Belgium today.

Yup Mexico played great against Brazil. Brazil will have to improve a lot if they want to win this tournament. I guess the biggest news of the week was Spain getting knocked out but they have already been joined by Australia, England and Honduras. Holland stuttered against Australia but Chile/Spain, Uruguay/England, Italy/Costa Rica and France's demolition of Switzerland were great games. I have to say this Brazillian cartoon of Suarez and Rooney made me laugh but Suarez was amazing for Uruguay.araneae wrote:Brazil Mexico was a good game. I am guessing copious amounts of beer but really I don\t know I have never been to Brazil. I was in a Brazillian restaurant once and they served a lot of all you can eat meat on skewers. What kinds of foods and drinks are consumed in Brasil and during the World Cup? Does anyone know?
Yeah I thought after Germany scored they would run riot but instead they collapsed and let Ghana back in. All credit to Ghana though they played superb. The USA team must really fancy their chances of qualifying at the top of the group now if they can get a result against Portugal tonight. I'm still not convinced about Argentina, they had to rely on Messi again for an elusive goal.DeathBySnooSnoo wrote:WTF happened to Germany today...they should have stomped Ghana...

Typically, the meals I had consisted of beans and rice (topped with farinha), salad (lettuce, tomato, onion and oil/vinegar dressing), pasta with tomato sauce, and chicken. That was a pretty basic, standard-fare meal (down in the south where I lived). Of course, they eats lots of different things, from pizza and McDonald's to fish and stew. What has been popularized in the USA is the Brazilian churrasco, or BBQ. They have sword-sized skewers that they cook meat on and then they slice off pieces. At the restaurants, they constantly come by your table with tons of different meats (and pineapple, one of my favorites). A side of pão de queijo (cheese bread balls) was usually on the menu as well. For dessert, I always enjoyed a fresh-cooked churro from some street-side vendor, ice cream (avacado and maracujá -aka passionfruit- being two favorites), and I can't remember the name of the last one, but it was a pudding with layers of cookies inside. Delicious!SpyderEdgeForever wrote:What kinds of foods and drinks are consumed in Brasil and during the World Cup? Does anyone know?
For beverages, I'd imagine they consume a lot of beer during the world cup. If you're looking for something a little more unique, Guaraná is a soft drink that is widely consumed throughout Brazil. They also have tons of juices, of which my favorites were guava and maracujá. If you head down south, they also drink a tea called chimarrão, which I can only describe as looking like a bunch of lawn trimmings from the lawnmower soaked in hot water. Can't say I ever tried it, as it didn't smell to great.
