Don't know if anyone noticed but the black Southard is now on the Howes Knife Shop website, where the new ones are often listed first. Pricey though at $277! He has both collectors and non-CC versions but neither are in stock (not sure how many there were before). Due up on May 27.

Someoe clear it up for me, is it DLC or Carbo Nitride/other? Read somewhere that it isnt DLC.

From GP's website: "durable titanium carbonitride black coated blade" so its not DLC.
I don't how TiCN compares to the DLC.

I suspect it would be like other titanium coatings, using some form of electrolytic process, should be bonded pretty tightly to the blade and to itself. Not sure about resistance specifically to scratches, dings, etc but I would guess it would be pretty darn durable compared to most other coatings.

I was so excited for this knife I had to get the standard version in anticipation. Now I'm torn because I love the Ti color and feel of the standard one. I'd love to swap the black blade into the standard handle but not for $277.

Street price seems to be $263 at most of the online shops I've seen them listed so far (howes lists at $277 but does a 5% discount when you add to cart). Is that extra $14 enough to persuade you?

I love the handles but don't like coated blades. That would look sweet with the blade from the original.

To anyone who has the black Southard -- is the clip any different than on the original?
Love my Southard but my clip tried to stab me and I had to put her to sleep.

I agree, I never did like the brown scales used on the regular Southard.

It's pretty easy and very cheap to change the stock brown scale to black you know... :) . Plus all the available aftermarket scales available, it's one of the most dynamic mod models out there! Clip is easy enough to change too, courtesy of STR over on BF. Cheers, Radioactive

It is a over travel stop for the lock bar.
