Sprint run or Production?

#1

Post by hawaiihunter »

I am constantly thinking about whether I should hold out for another Sprint run Paramilitary 2 or to just buy a production one. I see very good things about the sprints and stuff, but I am wondering if I should just get a s30v one. Any input is appreciated.

I would tell you that it depends on the price of the sprint. If you are gonna pay a ridiculous price just for a better steel, then I'd say no. But, if you find one for a good price, I'd say it's worth it.

The PM2 is sure to get future sprints/exclusives, so it's not a terrible idea if you don't immediately need a knife and want something special. Often you don't have to pay all that much more for the premium steel if you manage to snag one firsthand. On the other hand, though, for most users S30V will do just fine and the PM2 is a phenomenal general use platform.

I hope it does, but what "good" steels are left for it to be made in?

They could do a lot. Cruwear, CPM-M4, S110V, K390, CTS-BD30P, CTS-B75P, 4v, 9v, 10v, 15v, K294, 20CV, CPM-154, etc.

Hi Folks!

I'd say if you really like the steel on some Sprint Run you could hunt it down on the web till you find a nice price and then go for it. But only if you really like that premium steel.

If you just wanna have the amazing qualities of the mighty Para2 as an user, it ain't worth to wait for a Sprint Run.

Just get the production S30V which is an amazing steel and use it. You won't regret it at all, and maybe you'll end up buying a backup S30V Para2.

After looking at all of those steels that you said, I really am taking a liking to Cts-B75p, and Cts 20v and M4. Thank you, I will dream about these steels now.

They could even do more, but off the top of my head those are the only american made steels that they either haven't used yet or that seem reasonable for them to use.

Unfortunately, the Paramilitary 2 has never been available in a "good" steel, and none of the sprints have been "good." ;) Seriously, the standard production S30V version is excellent, and most of the sprints have been exceptional.

Spyderco does a fabulous job with S30V. I wouldn't hesitate to buy, use and abuse a standard production Para2.

Since I have plenty of other knives to do the job in the meantime, I tend to wait for sprint runs of the models that are likely to receive the sprint or exclusive treatment.

Let me rephrase it, I didn't mean standard "good". I was talking about Spyderco "good". They produce such high quality products that I became kind of snobby, especially when talking about the steel it is made out of. Sorry for any confusion.

Here is how I see it when comparing (correct me if I'm wrong) M4, Cts-B75P, 20v

Corrosion Resistance: 20v>Cts-B75P>M4
Toughness: M4>B75P>20v
Edge Retention: 20v>B75P>M4
Looking for: Grey Cts-20cp Paramilitary 2

Depends on what you want to use it for.

I am currently considering a plain S30V PM2 or Military as my camping/outdoors/travelling folder, as I do not want to damage or lose an expensive and rare sprint on holiday.

No confusion, hence the friendly ;) I do want to say that the production blades are really excellent performers - better than some of the sprint/exclusive versions. :) Since the existing sprint/exclusive variants are very expensive and there aren't any new ones on the horizon, I'd strongly suggest getting one of the production versions.

Get a production PM2,the sprints are too hard to find. They are not made in sufficient quantity to satisfy demand.

Like others have said; S30V is great, pretty tough, great wear resistance, pretty corrosion resistant and not to bad to sharpen. It is a nicely balanced steel that works great in a folder.

No reason to wait for a sprint imho..

Agree. Go ahead and get a production para to hold you over while you wait for the next sprint.
