Stretch blade jibing

#1

Post by Hector Castro »

I was wondering if someone could answer a question about the CF Spyderco Stretch Blade Jibbing in ZDP-189.
the picture below is like the CF one I have. The back blade Jibbing is like stair steps. Large.

The newer blade Jibbing is fine toothed. Was this only done on the CF ZDP 189 stretch blade? The newer ZDP-189 stretch with the fern handle has the fine back blade jibbing too?

The old "gator teeth" (I think that was the nickname) jimping was the older design. I recall the Stretch and some knives like the Para1 transitioned in the middle of the lifespan to the current style.

That style of jimping was used on the early runs of the CF/ZDP-189 Stretch, and before that on the original VG-10 SS with Kraton inlays Stretch. Later runs of the CF/ZDP-189 version, and all the FRN and Nishijin GF versions, have used the finer jimping.

I miss this jimpimg. It would be nice to see it on a sprint or remake version. Maybe with a new Chinook or something.

I have both an older carbon fiber stretch and a newer cf stretch, and the "dinosaur" jimping as I call it is quite unique. Before I found out it was normal, I thought the previous owner went crazy with a dremel or something.

I prefer the newer jimping. My first salt 1 has the old stepped style as does my para 1. I find the finer jimping is less likely to cause a hot spot with extended use.
So many knives, so few pockets... :)

I have an old CF stretch with this jimping. I prefer the newer "gear-like" jimping as found on knives such as the PM2, Manix etc.

In the few knives I used the "stepped" kind wasn't nearly as functional while it looked and felt cooler. Prob the best I've used is the kind from the Adventura but that would take your skin off like a saw if it wanted to :p .

These days I would prefer less knives with any jimping.

I'm leaning the same way Blake. OTOH, if Spyderco is going to put jimping on a knife, the "fine saw tooth" style currently used on most of their Seki City folders, and some built elsewhere, is both reasonably effective and the least unattractive.
