I posted this question on Knife Forums but didn't get an answer. I can get a super deal on a Peter Herbst folder with aluminum handles etc. On another web site for $20 more I can get a newer version with VG10 steel and titanium blades. Any opinions? Is is worth the $20? I just signed up here so excuse me if I'm missing something?

Not a problem. First, welcome to the <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> Forum. There are wonderful people here to advise you about anything <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> and more! There have been some discussion already about the steel between one knife to the next. People have preferences. This is key. What works for one person doesn't for the next. Take the following for instance.

While I was in the Military (GO NAVY!!!) the salt air and moisture reaked havoc on a lot of my multi-tools and knives. So, now comes the knowledge (or so I call it! ;P). VG-10 has some nice qualities. The edge retention and corrosion resistance are at high ratings. But, if you prefer a better edge retention, you should go for the CPM 440V steel. Some folks already mentioned that it is not as easy to sharpen a CPM 440V in comparasion to many other steels, maybe because of brittleness of the steel. With all that said, I have always noticed when buying yet another <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>, I am usually looking for the VG-10 Steel. Just my opinion...

I would go with VG-10 and Titanium handles. I didn't even know that there was a Ti handled model. I would love to get one of those.
Can you share that website?

It isn't a titanium handle -- it is titanium coloured Almite. Only the Solingen models had Ti handles.

a bit of Herbst history:

The original run had titanium handles with blue annodizing in the inset design. Blades were 440C and marked Solingen. these were made in Germany and when they did not meet the strict Spyderco quality control a large number were scrapped. Possibly only 200 - 300 ever distributed making this original model rare & highly prized by collectors.

Next came the aluminum handle version with the ats-55 blade steel made in Japan

This was followed by the current aluminum handled version VG-10 version made in Japan.

fred - I'm not sure about the VG-10 or the Ti handles - I note that the picture at Knife Center is a collectors edition (variant) and the blade is ATS-55. Also, the Spyderco Website still shows ATS-55 as the blade steel. You might give the Knife Center a call to confirm that the knifes are indeed VG-10. If they are, I would get the VG-10 over the ATS-555 whether or not the handles are Titanium.

Hi Fred, welcome aboard. The VG10 is a great steel, easy to sharpen and with a very good edge retention. Makes a great assortment with some Ti scales and IMO it worth the extra 20$.

They are in VG-10, as I bought one from knifecenter.

Al, did your knife also have the Ti handles as advertised?

Hi Fred and welcome to the forum ~ According to the knifecenter specs, it should be - but as Carlos has pointed out it is Titanium coloured Almite scales but it's definitely a VG-10 blade.
