What is the best way to give the Pingo a point?

#1

Post by Doc Dan »

Hi folks,

I really like my Pingo...but it does not have a point. I was thinking of trying to give it a rounded sheepfoot point like that found on the Benchmade Griptilian with the hole. It kind of rounds down to the point. Barring that, I thought of making a clip point.

1. What do you all think of the feasibility?
2. What problems will I run into?
3. I only have my files and diamond hones with me so what would work best?
4. How do I finish it out nicely?

I used a cut off wheel, then diamond bits on my Dremel, then sanding and polishing. I plan to do a clip point as soon as it warms up.

I still love the original shape, too. Good luck, and show us when you do it.

Personally I would just make it a full on wharncliffe and give it a more triangular tip.

Would love to see something along the lines of David's suggestion.

It would look much like this modded Rock Lobster by CBO6ODA here on the forums. I'll probably take my Rock Lobster to a little more of a point than that though.

Thank you. :) I can't wait to do a clip point with a swedge.
Make sure you keep the blade cool with water whilst grinding. Don't want to mess up the heat treat or melt the FRN. Be careful not to accidentally close the blade on yourself while working, too, since it doesn't lock.

Wow! That is what I had in mind and looks even better than I thought it would. I wish I had a grinder with me :( All I have are some diamond hones and a couple of files. I wonder how hard this will be?

Hey, you could have a second job working over Pingos.

If you can afford a Dremel or similar rotary tool, you can do anything with it and all the bits you can attach to it. You can do it with your tools. It'll just take a lot longer. Either way, patience is number 1.
