I love FRN.....

#1

Post by Screwdriver »

I pulled a bunch of my Spydies out last night. Gayle Bradley, Military, Resilience, Delica FRN, Endura FRN, Salts, Harpy SS, and Cricket SS. And for me, the type of Spyderco FRN that is on the Endura 4 is my favorite. It is not exotic, but the grip pattern is near perfect.

So just for giggles, I decided to clean my Orange Military since the orange G-10 was picking up the blue from my jeans. While cleaning it with hot soapy water, it became somewhat slick. When I tried it with my Endura.....it was still grippy. I also like how the FRN pattern helps when pushing and pulling the knife.

I really like FRN.

FRN is great for what it's designed for and for use within those parameters...never had a FRN scale to fail and I've been buying them since my original ATS-55 Delica years ago...cheers!

I agree, FRN is wonderful to feel and is durable and an all-around great handle material.

+1 its a forgiving material that takes damage in stride, with a casual industrial design appeal and functionality. Just not enough of it in lime green.

I like it as well. It's my favorite user handle material.

Frn is great stuff, what i like most about it is the grip, also i tend to use my knives a bit on the harsh side, so if it gets scuffed it shows nice scars.

I work in construction and when it get really hot outside, my pants are all dirty and soaked with sweat, any weight in my pockets makes it all the worse.

The weight of FRN knives really helps from making everything uncomfortable, Heaven forbid if i become grumpy and irritable during the dog days of summer ;)
learning it the hard way...

I'm one of FRN's biggest fans. I don't know why people hate it so.Check out this thread for some serious testing and abuse...

Oh yes, another FRN fan here. If I were to be dropped on an alien planet with only one folder on me I'd very much preffer an (unlinered) FRN (and H1) Spydie.

I really like FRN, especial on my small and mid size. Now as the knife size gets larger, other material is more acceptable.

FRN just has a feel that is very comfortable to me, just grips into my hand, without hurting. It can be scratched but doesn’t crack or chip as easy as other materials. It's light weight, but sturdy. Can make any kind of grip pattern, seems to be produced in more colors.

I don’t think it looks cheap just a personal opinion, that I know differs from some others, and that is ok I can understand why.

When I don’t prefer the FRN, is when there is a lot of time in hand use. Most days, I actual use the knife 15 min or less. But when I am going to using a knife for 30 min stretches, or considerable about of time throughout a day. Then G-10 or Micarta is what I lean to most of the time. It would be interesting to know as time a knife is use daily increases does also the handle material preference significantly tend to one type over the others.

Metal (ivory) handles I like when engraved or etched on small or mid size knives, but then they become too nice to EDC. I would not hesitate carrying a FRN on dressy or formal occasions. But a nice wood, or bone handle is my 1st choice. Stone and Gems – I would only use for dressy or formal occasion also, I appreciate how nice they can look, but most not enough to buy. I do have a couple.

I'm perfectly fine with FRN, not my favorite but it's ok.
Wish Spyderco would make more FRN with the pattern of the Calypso jr.
