Tenacious
Tenacious
Over the last few months I've noticed a habit of mine. I have numerous amounts of spyderco knives. When I get up to head out for the day more and more I've noticed me automatically reaching for one of my tenacious knives over my many other spyderco's. The tenacious even gets the nod over my favorite knife the left handed military. The reason subconsciously I started doing this is price. If I break my tenacious no biggy I just buy another. I've already got three. So my "nice" spyderco's are for self defense purposes only. Those dont go to work with me. The tenacious has become my real work horse. I know this may be blasphemy for a lot of people. To me it just makes sense. Keep the nice knives nice and let the value blade do its thing. Not to mention its easier to sharpen. Just a personal experience I wanted to share.

I guess it's a YMMV thing. I like to use my nice knives because that's where I find value in them. A self defense knife is a one use tool, it gets taken for evidence or you have to ditch it. I have a CF M390 millie and I don't want to have to ditch it after just using once.
I have a few knives dedicated for SD and the steels on those are just the regular steels but I have fancy steels on my user knives and if I don't use them, how will I get the value of how much I paid for them. :)
Anyway, that's just one fellow's opinion.

Knives you aren't afraid to use as tools are extremely useful. While I'm not abusive to any of mine some see a but more rugged days. I guess that's how they justify hanging with their snobby peers; I'm sure your Tenacious can relate. :)
When going into the city late I usually pack something cheap, sharp, and legal. Expensive and ideal causes me more concern than one in would gladly relinquish.

The value line are very good knives for any purpose.Buckaloo wrote:Over the last few months I've noticed a habit of mine. I have numerous amounts of spyderco knives. I don't know how you grew up or where you live of course. I am sad though that you feel the need to keep your nicer knives reserved for cutting other people up. I hope when you leave the house this isn't something you seriously need to worry about on a daily basis. Don't get me wrong. I'm a firm believer is someone defending himself and what's his. Based only on your post however you have two carry categories. Work and self defense. Personally, I'd rather gut someone with a cheap knife and when it gets confiscated it won't be much of a loss if I don't get it back. Or if no one sees what happened and you don't want to be involved with the investigation of the guy laying there you can throw the cheaper knife in the river and not throw your military (or other) away. I've seen enough of those cop shows to know you can't clean the knife well enough to remove all DNA evidence. Even if you get mugged and need to use the knife for legitimate SD I don't know you (we) can 100% trust how it will turn out in court. If the mugger survives he may sue you.
Or are you the mugger and need a nice knife to defend yourself against the old ladies you are mugging?
If you need to worry about being attacked enought to reserve beautiful knives or the knives with the best steel or grip or whatever I think you should move AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Your knives are yours to do with what you want of course. I just hate for you to have this worry. Be safe.
I may regret posting this later. No insult or criticism intended. I would just prefer you use the cheaper knife to cut someone's guts out.
Jack
While the tenacious is a great knife and it would do just as well as more expensive knives, I personally like to carry my more expensive blades because it just brings me enjoyment of carrying it and using it. Also I love to showing them off to people who ask about it, not showing off because of how much they are but because of the type of steel, materials, and quality of them.
I bought my Tenacious when I was planning a trip back to Peru, and wanted a decent knife that wouldn't upset me too much if something happened to it. It is a good knife for the money. (I just wish it had a choil :) ).
But for carrying/using here in the U.S., I'll carry even my most expensive Spydie (provided I'm not going to a courthouse/airport/someplace it will get confiscated of course). I figure if I buy a knife with some super-steel, only to let it sit in the safe, I might as well have bought jewelry or something, it's just decoration. To me the whole reason to have a super-steel knife it to be able to take advantage of it, use it like it was meant to be used :) .
Today I'm carrying my fluted Ti Native 5 (among other knives :) ). It is a hard-to-obtain knife, just a few seem to have trickled out to dealers, but I get joy in holding it in my hand, and it took a very nice sharp edge! If I leave a knife in the safe I don't get to enjoy it (just my opinion).
