Forum Native 5 - modification?

#1

Post by hom76 »

I would like to see how many of you would do some mod work on the forum knife. What kind of mod work would you do - reprofiling the blade or custom scales, etc?

But I guess most of you would keep this beauty as it is.

If you consider rebeveling as a mod, then yes. Other than sharpening, I like my knives stock. I usually can't stand using a knife with a factory bevel. :)

I am planning a low ride ti clip for mine. I'm also not crazy about the "forum knife" laser etching on the blade, might remove it.

Actually I got a pair of spare CF scales for Native5 and I am still thinking whether I should put them on the Forum knife..... although I do think that the dark green stock scales also look good!

Scale color or material doesn't matter much to me on this one. I just want to see how well HT'd S110V does. :)

Since I can't afford a custom, this one is the next best thing.

I'm not going anywhere near mine with powertools

Also, I'll be trading it.

The green G-10 scales do nothing for me, but I collect Spyderco Forum Knives and, on top of that, I already have a Native V that's been modded to my tastes, so I have no incentive to swap them out.

First of all, I love Forum Native5 as is.
Also IMHO Forum knives are symbols of the Forum and if you mod Forum knife, it will not be a Forum knife anymore. Any modding, (I do not consider reprofiling a modding) would defeat the purpose of Forum knife.

This is as close to a "mod" as I will do, but I do this with most of my knives anyway. Is that a real modification? If so all of my knives are modded. I look on this knife as a "custom" anyway from Spyderco, a great bargain considering how much work in fit & finish went into it already. I just can't see changing it at this point. It's pretty close to perfect already!

I rebeveled the edge and put a lowrider clip on but otherwise I will leave the forum knife intact.

I have some mods I want to try on the Native 5 involving backspacers and a drill press, but I will see if I can find a user for sale somewhere to perform my experiments on.

You are going to remove that nice solid back spacer.I change my mind some file work on the backspacer and blade spine would be sweeeet!I am thinking of doing that to my flueted ti native 5 .some reaps nice tight file work right along the back and spine of the blade would just put that knife over the top.does anyone here do filework ?would you be willing to take my ti native 5 and file it?

Reprofile, new scales, and a lowrider clip sound fine to me. It will be used.

I don't generally mod my stuff (except sharpening if that counts). I like this forum knife just like it is. The green textured scales, tasteful blade markings, blade grind and shape. It's all great as is.

Not that money should have a bearing on what people do with their fun and money...but...it's almost guaranteed to reduce the value of a knife that unscathed is upwards of $300.

Why wouldn't someone just get a Native5 with boring black scales and tool with that? It's a perfectly excellent blade steel and worth 1/3rd of what the Forum Knife is.

+1. Will have "Forum Knife" removed, and looking into a deep pocket carry clip.

Flitz or a similar low abrasive metal polish would be a good place to start before doing anything more drastic.
