Finding a USN Catcherman?

#1

Post by neil944 »

I'm new to knife collecting and the forum. Needless to say I've been bitten by the Spyder bug in a major way!

I would like to ask for some advice on obtaining a Model C17PSGRBK USN Catcherman. I've been able to locate only one (1) on the big auction site, but I think $225 is bit high for an asking price. Am I wrong?
Is there any other place or sites I could be looking?

I live on the coast in Texas where everything rusts. This is how I got turned onto Spyderco in the first place, the wonderful, almost magical, H-1 steel.

I am now the proud owner of a Salt 1, and all the various colors of Ladybugs put out by CountyComm a while back. I sent my Pacific Salt to a buddy living in Hawaii, so it is only with me in spirit ;)

The Catcherman in H-1 would fit the bill perfectly for a fishing/hunting knife that would see regular dunks in the salt water here, I just can't find the darn thing! (Another possible sprint run, huh Spyderco?)

Any ideas where to find one, other than fleabay?

secondary market is your only chance: fleabay or classifieds in forums that offer them.

Those H1 versions arent coming up too frequently on the bay - I have been getting the daily search updates and when they do hit they are always in that +$200 range

Waiting patiently by the monitor and making regular sacrifices of bluefish / stripers will yield a Catcherman some day

Since Wanted-to-Buy/Sell posts aren't allowed here, I guess the best we can do is point out places that might still have a particular model in stock. But I *think* the H-1 Catcherman was only sold through the SFO, with the possible exception of stores that also subscribe to the Collector's Club.

I guess that is the problem with finding out about a model/getting excited about a model after it is discontinued and hard to find. I have had that problem with a few models, they just didn't appeal to me until *after* you couldn't get them anymore :) . The USN green H-1 Catcherman didn't sell particularly quickly as I recall. I had seen so many posts wishing the Catcherman would be brought back prior to the USN run, I had expected them to sell out very quickly, but they were still available for several months after release. I was hoping Spyderco wouldn't regret having brought out the run if they didn't sell fast enough.

I have not followed their selling price on ebay, I'm surprised they are going for that much - I guess if you have to pay ebay fees and paypal fees, the seller doesn't actually get *all* of that money.
Which Knife, A or B? get Both! (and C, D and E) :)

Thanks for the replies guys.

It looks like I discovered Spyderco a few years too late! There are several knives that I really like that have been discontinued in the recent past.
Oh well, no use crying over spilled milk. I will just have to stay abreast of the forums and current catalog from here on out.

I know some places that have the originals but not the USN model. As mentioned above look for them on blade and put up a saved search on your eBay act so you will get an email when one pops up. You might get lucky and have one come up that has a BIN option. Good luck.
