Quick Tenacious Question...
Quick Tenacious Question...
Hey,
Does anyone know what the coating is on the black Tenacious knives...probally gotta pick up a part serrated soon(also does that count as part spyderedge? LOL) and just made me curious...I have not had any of the "budget" spydies before, but it looks great and well I feel like buying something new sooo...a black Tenacious looks like a winner.
Thanks guys

I came in thinking this would be an easy question to search for an answer, since I have no experience personally. yet there seems to be no concrete information. some vendors mislabeled it as DLC, which I'm 99 percent sure is wrong. it seems to just be an unspecified, non reflective black coating. some type of heavy duty surface application, like a paint but stronger, most likely.

Dear KaBar666:
The coating on the Tenacious is black oxide. In general, Spyderco's US-made knives are DLC coated. Japanese-made knives are usually TICN, though the Perrin Street Bowie is ceramic. Taiwan-made knives are TICN. China is black oxide.
The choice of coating is determined by the technology available in the country of manufacture.
Stay safe,
Mike

To be honest it doesn't matter what is much at all as I plan to buy it anyway. I really was only asking for my own curiosity.

They are just my preference, part serrated(most of the time, depending on knife, blade, and serration pattern) be it on a "fighter" self/defense/offense knife or utility knife.RanCoWeAla wrote:What do you serrations for?
I typically carry at least two knives on me. One for utility tasks and One specific to if I need it in a pinch be it to defend myself, or if need be save another...I like serrations, good serrations anyway for the advantages they offer in cutting certain things, and also that serrations will cut still even if dull, or I mean more or less saw through most materials, so I prefer them, and while a good sharp plain edge knife will still cut say a seatbelt, if for whatever I did have use said knife for a long duration with something, or on something previously to dull it, I still like knowing I have the capability to cut someone from a seatbelt or other such situation.
SO typically more times than not I prefer part serrated, and sometimes depending the blade even go for full serrated...however for knives or makers with crappy serration patterns than of course I stick with plain edge. Or for a given design like for example my Yojimbo 2, I like plain edge (only option, but I mean I probally would not serrated)
Also again thanks Mr. Janich for designing an awesome knife.
Anyway serrations offer some advantages over plain edge that I have not mentioned. But you could a few advantages back that plain edge have. I like them all, and have knives of all. I don't really get into the argument with these things over which is better...too many people do that. I rather have people just understand what each is all about and choose for themselves what they like. Not do the whole my way is better than yours thing ya know.
Also this is all refer to folders...I have a complete other set of thought for my fixed blades.

Weird, but I'm inclined to take Mr. Janich word on it that its oxide. and the pamphlet probally has a typo/misformation by accident. I've seen it before with other companies too, it happens.Bladekeeper wrote:Interesting as someone stated the vendors mislabelled it DLC.
My black tenacious has the spyderco leaflet which quotes it being DLC .
Learn so etching new everyday :D .

The "leaflet" enclosed with newer Spyderco products is called a "Product Information Guide" or PIG. I write all these personally, so I was concerned that I might have made an error on the coating description. I reviewed both "generations" of the Tenacious PIG. In the first generation, I mistakenly identified the coating as TICN. That PIG was approved and used for several months. I later learned that the coating was actually a form of black oxide, so I corrected the copy, we destroyed all the incorrect PIGs, and have been using the corrected version ever since. It identifies the coating simply as a "durable black coating."Bladekeeper wrote:Interesting as someone stated the vendors mislabelled it DLC.

To the best of my knowledge, no official Spyderco literature has ever identified the Tenacious coating as DLC. Dealers may have incorrectly stated that, but we never have.
I hope this helps.

Maybe I saw the durable black coating then and my brain registers it as DLC .KBar666 wrote:Weird, but I'm inclined to take Mr. Janich word on it that its oxide. and the pamphlet probally has a typo/misformation by accident. I've seen it before with other companies too, it happens.
I could've sworn it said DLC but until I find it ill presume I got it wrong .
Destroying pigs just because of some spelling mistakes seems a bit harsh mike
Still the bacon and pork rib BBQ are good :D .
I think it looks very similar though to DLC and much better than the black paint others use.
I do like traction coating on Esse though , but the Ontario rat and C.R.K.T black coating are awful .

I think you were very unlucky I have all but the blue tenacious all came hair shaving sharp..357 mag wrote:I can't say anything about the tenacious and the black coating but the "value line folders" are good to go. I have resilience and other than the dull and uneven edge (easy fix) the knife is great!
Just got the Resilience and its razor sharp but it happens from time to time .
And you can put a scary sharp edge on it yourself which is part of the fun

Yeah...well Hopefully mine comes sharp, lol. I don't have the ability right now to redo and edge, keep it up yes...but totally re do would be a bit of trick. for now anyway.Bladekeeper wrote:I think you were very unlucky I have all but the blue tenacious all came hair shaving sharp.

Well guys its here... and its nice a sharp, no complaints there. In fact I really have no complaints, suppose if I must have one, it came kinda squeaky when opening, but some lube helped that. But my only small gripe I could have is that it has a really, really late lockup out the box(mine came that way I mean, I'm aware not all are like that) and I don't care too much, my only worry about it is, I hope it doesn't move much for a long, long time because I like the thing to much for it to die on me, I hope it lasts a long time.
Or if it reaches its end, will spyderco take care of it? New liner? Anyway, tomorrow it will be with me for sure, and possibly the zip tie wave mod is gonna make its way on it.
