Chaparral FRN????

#1

Post by Holland »

This might be out of line in regards to the direction the series is going, but i would love to have an FRN Chaparral with full liners. Maybe nested liners would be cool. Anyone else interested in the idea?

+1 if you're talking about a chaparral 3 because the titanium version is a little bit too steep for me!
but I really like the blade shape it could be a nice worker maybe even with S30V!
maybe if I'm lucky I'll get a chaparral 2 for a reasonable price!

The series seems to double the price of the previous knife so it should be some kind of ultra-expensive "stepped FRN"... :D

Translucent FRCP would be an interesting choice.

Or GITD. But I'm in either way, especially if it's the same fish-scale texture on the Caly Jr.

Hi Holland,

We're working on one but we're still a ways out on final design.

It sounds nice. Maybe there is a way to "fancy up" the FRN.

I've been working on a particular texture design. The "Stealth" pattern on the Chappy 2 took Peter and I over a year to nail down. Much more complicated that would be imagined. It was actually supposed to be the Chappy 1, but it was taking so long we offered the CF version first. I still think it's the best and I carry one often. I'm trying to get a certain "look". So far I've not gotten there. The Chappy 3 is very difficult to make and is limited in production. I'd like to get the Chaparral pattern available in an easily affordable FRN version before continuing with the more sophisticated designs or materials. The Mammoth tooth didn't work, the sheephorn didn't work and the brass is proving challenging to get the material.

Sheesh, there's a lot more going on behind the scenes with the Chaparral. I think I do like the Chaparral 1 the best of the three, but the other two are nice, also.

It's too bad you couldn't mix something into the FRN and make like a Lightning Strike FRN... or a normal color with glow powder and make a hint of glow in the dark. Maybe Moonglow behind a Jade G-10.

There usually aren't many options with G-10, maybe something interesting with Micarta. What is this Mesh Micarta?

I don't know if Boomer could keep up, maybe another machine shop could cut a bunch of Spyder logo patterned G-10.

Damascus Scales? Bolsters were used on the 25th anniversary Delica.

You would think that whoever produces the FRN might be able to give some ideas on how to dress it up.

Here is some random stuff I found on the web.

Antique Bone Linen Micarta (Borrowed from Knives Ship Free)

Custom Acrylic, someone said they got this image from EDCF.

Some guy on Ebay calls this Mesh Micarta

They (Fort Henry Custom Knives) say this is Textured Micarta. This might not fit the mood of the Chaparral series, but I think it looks pretty nice.

I'd be more than happy with the Caly Jr. fish scale texture on a FRN Chaparral, but I'll be interested both in what Spyderco comes up with for this one, and in any FRN Chaparral regardless.

Yes!! Yes!! Yes!! :D

I've felt so guilty lately... I think the Chap may be superior to the Native 5! Sacrilegious I know Roman. The stealth Ti Chap 2 is nearly too much awesomeness in one package, thank you Sal!! FRN would be nice as well, and there are certainly readily available materials at your disposal Sal: polished G10 for one, and the newer resin-based ones out there are phenomenal. Here's a polished blue G10 and black Ctek Chap 1 that Steve Ketchen modded for me (black G10 liners too!). This and the Ti Chap have crowned themselves pretty much the kings of my LBK Spydies. Like I said in other threads, a very worthy successor to the Kopa series and so worthy of the same diversification!

Thanks so much for the Chap series Sal, can't wait to see what's next especially because I know what it means to you!! Cheers, Radioactive :)

I think FRN would make it more affordable. I was also thinking of polished natural G10 (ghost) or lightning strike carbon fiber (or blue weave, either one).

That's quite the awesome EDC package you have there, RS! I share your love of the Chaparral line. The mammoth tooth composite material was truly awesome, and I'm so sad to see it not be production capable. I wish more people would have gotten to see and handle it.
