While looking at the new 2013 catalog I spotted some must buys for 2013, one of those being the new Enuff fixed blade with FRN scales. Looks like a great design. This got me thinking about the Mule line and the up coming release of the next model. Sal is there any chance Spyderco would be willing to make FRN scales for the Mule team project? Would the members of this forum be willing to purchase these scales if that were to happen. I know a lot of members make their own as I have and purchase premade G10 ones from Halpern. But, I think FRN would be a great material for the Mule Team project. Let me know what you all think!

I love the Halpern thicker option scales and keep an extra set around for the next Mule.
Having seen this question come up before it seems that you'll probably have to live with the existing options, ie buy them from a third party or make them yourself.
FRN isn't my favorite scale material, although it works okay I don't find it very stylish.

Halpern Titanium makes scales. We've talked about how nice it would be if Spyderco sold them so that we could order only one Mule and set of scales and get free shipping.

I have made my own scales and own 3 sets of Halpern scales. Halpern makes an outstanding product. My problem is more than 1/2 of my mules are still naked (no scales). I also like variety in things. FRN is a very durable material and since it is molded allows that excellent texturing! I was hoping Sal and Company could maybe do a 250-500 piece run of X color just to see how they sell. I'm sure that is not cheap to do but, I'm sure they are not making huge profits on the whole Mule project.

I'd be interested pending the colour options. Don't see it happening though...

FRN tooling is very expensive. We probably wouldn't do it for the Mule Team, especially with Halpern & Sheathpro focused on them.

We tooled up for the "Enuff" model as we thought the market was larger. Especially with 3 blade styles. They're in and should be shipping shortly.

I totally understand Sal. I had to ask again. I will definitely be picking up an Enuff. With the 3 blade styles they should be great sellers!

It's too bad the Enuff and the Mules are not the same handle shape. Then there would be no need for any new tooling. What fits the Enuff fits the Mule, problem solved. But oh well.

Honestly, the price and shipping of them would be more expensive then some custom handle makers.
A friend of mine named mason leeth (http://www.facebook.com/LeethalCutlery?fref=ts) makes wood scales that are quick and reliable (he also keeps you up to date via text if you want of the work progress as it goes)
Instead of FRN try going for a wood handle because as Sal said it gets pricey to tool FRN.

As for the Enuff, as I look at this knife, I see the perfect bugout bag knife. I am thinking of buying one or 2 (one for car, one for a bugout/random hike bag. (Probably a sheepfoot for car and a clip point bag) The 4oz makes it light weight and the under 3 inch blade makes it legal friendly. Great when in the mountains and crossing statelines(Something to consider for a trunk knife).

This might be OT or already discussed somewhere else, but what is the likelihood of an SE Mule?

I would say the old standby VG10 since the majority of spydercos use this steel. I know it is not very Geewiz but it is the spyderco benchmark standard steel.

It's not often that I immediately flip over one of these newer models. Because for the past 2 to 3 years there hasn't really been a lot of the newer stuff that has intrigued me so much

But those new ENUFF models simply caught my eye and I immediately put them on my "GOTTA HAVE LIST". It's as though the Lil Temperance models with all it's variations have been transformed into small fixed blades :cool:

As I have really started taking a special interest in Spyderco's fixed blades in the last 3 to 4 years I'm looking very forward to obtaining all 3 of the ENUFF models. The Spyderedged model looks so cool and the other 2 plain edged models truly do look like the rebirth of the Lil Temperance models. BRING THEM ON!!!

What about a customizable ENUFF? I have seen requests for different mule blade shapes, some which are present in the ENUFF line already. There could be a undressed model for those wanting to make scales and the option to choose a FRN scale color. Since it is already part of the ENUFF product, you could also get a sheath with the scaled option, which I have also seen requests for. There could also be the choice between H1 and VG-10 as steel options. Probably crazy talk but it could be cool and possible since the tooling and design work are already in place. This could be a base. Then there could also be a experimental model using different steels with the option of being scaled or not, crazy talk, I know.

I brought a mule/customizable skeleton up at the OKCA and Sal smiled. He said I was far from the first to mention that idea, and that he didn't dislike it.

I would love this option. CTS XHP, CPM S30V, CPM D2, pretty much anything you put into it or the steels indicated below by DBSS. This type of option would also give end users so options for other mules (swapping scales and sheaths).

VG-10 would be my choice.
