Pingo impressions

#1

Post by dbcad »

A combination of factors led to my acquiring this model :) First hand witnessing here of how the idea for this model first developed and following it's progress over many months, the distinctive shape and style the concept evolved into, quality blade steel, affordable price point, and unobtrusive as well as friendly "personality" all eventually led to my buying the Pingo :D

Having followed this model for a while what I recieved was very much in line with my expectations. Inexpensive, yet comfortable scales paired with a seriously pleasing piece of quality steel :) Out of the box the Pingo had a very nice edge :) Fit and finish are quite nice. I can't find an issue to pick at :D

Aside from the construction, I have to say the long slow contiuous curve of the edge drew me in. An opposite curve on the handle helps the grip to be secure and enhances the overall aesthetic effect. Like any guy I am a sucker for nice curves ;) especially my wifes ;)

The very nice factory edge has been superceded by my own gloriously imperfect one ;) For me that's a sign this low cost high value little knife will be a keeper :D

If you enjoy smaller knives and can appreciate a slowly curving modified sheepsfoot blade this knife is for you :D

I feel exactly the same about the Pingo.
Had mine a week now and I'm having to EDC 2 knives because I need to keep lovin' my Urban too!
The Boker Cox could have been as good as a Pingo if it wasn't so heavy, bulky and triple the price...
This ticks all the boxes for a perfect little EDC penknife.

The Pingo enthusiasm seems to be over for most folks :)

For me this model represents open mindedness of Spyderco towards different requirements, an understanding of the public they wish to serve and sell to, and a very productive way of collaboratiom with other top designers :)

Enjoy your knives and keep 'em sharp, but don't discount the Pingo :D It's a delightful little blade :D

I love the look of the Pingo. I haven't had a chance to hold one yet...and with xmas and the disco list right now I just can't buy one. But as soon as I can I will be at least getting on in hand to try out.

If I really like it, it might replace my Boker Exskelibur as my edc for food knife.

Love the look of the Pingo. One nit to pick (of course): I wish there was a choil to keep the blade from accidentally closing, like the Urbans have. Of course, with a knife this small, there probably wouldn't be much blade left if there was a choil, right?

Hi Tod,

We put jimping on the bottom of the tang to catch on the finbger if the knife is accidentally closed.

I would imagine that it would be easiest to actually grip with your index finger on the jimping so I don't think that there is much of a risk of closing accidentally.

I wonder if spyderco will make a large Spyder hole one hand opening version?

Not for me sir, the Pingo is on my Christmas wishlist :D

I was instantly enamored with the mini Rock Lobster like blade and overall size of this knife and I think it will be a great addition to rotate with my Squeak.
