Request: Jester review

#1

Post by mac_heath »

Planning out my next acquisitions, I'm thinking about 2 Jesters (PE/SE) and a blue Rescue. I currently carry a SS PE Dragonfly as my PC EDC. I'm interested in:

1. how the Jester compares to the Dragonfly (if you know)

2. Does the handle feel big (I can't stand my pinkie dropping off the end)?

3. How easy is it to open, particularly w/o a clip? My Dragonfly is so tight that I doubt I could open it w/o the clip.

4. Any other impressions.

Thanks,

mac_heath

Hi mac_heath,
I have a Micarta Jester (sorry don't like FRN) and a SS Dragonfly.

1) The Jester looks about half the size of the Dragonfly, but is only 25% smaller. The blade length is almost the same.

2) The Jester is about your average pink shorter then the Dragonfly, meaning that when I hold it, my pink doesn't touch anything. The grip however is good enough for a small knife.

3) Mine is very smooth, I can even spydie-drop it ! (both the dragonfly and the jester).

4) I suggest you try to get a Micarta one, they look a lot better then the FRN's. (but that's just my opinion). I bought this one, because the other small knives I have (Crickets & Dragonfly) are still too big for a lot of people.

Hope this helps.

Ted,

Thanks. I'll still probably get FRN 'cause it's cheaper, that way I can get 2 AND the blue rescue 93mm.

It sounds like I'll want to put a lanyard (fob) on it, most likely a coil knot (reeve knot as it's called on this board). That should extend the handle enough for me.

I find the spydie drop takes too much time, and I worry about losing control of the knife. I stick to thumbing the hole.

Thanks again.

I don't have any experience with the Dragonfly, but my FRN Jester SE has been on my keychain since the day that I bought it.

I don't worry about not getting a good grip on the Jester, because I have it on its' own keyring and this extends the grip. I was surprised that you could REALLY grip it, when needed, with the keyring extension. The ergonomics on this little Spydie are outstanding, IMO. I also don't have any problems opening up my Jester by using the Hole.

I have both the FRN Dragonfly and the Jester. The surprising thing was that I found it easier to open the Jester on either hand than the Dragonfly only on the right hand. Both arrived together and the Dragonfly is still a little stiff but loosening a bit more everyday.

The Jester certainly feels smaller than the Dragonfly, however, with the addition of the Reeve lanyard, you shouldn't have a problem. I've carried mine is this manner and it served me very well.

Simply an excellent knife. I have the micarta version and it has been on my work keychain almost since I got it (right next to my photon II). I too dislike a handle that leaves your pinky hanging loose. As the others have said a key ring or lanyard will remedy that. Although the design of the knife feels comfortable even without an extension.
