What is the difference between the black, blue, and orange dodos? aside from color. is there a difference? or were they just released at different times?

I only own an orange one but I believe the ball bearing lock mechanism was slightly improved from the original model.

The black and blue were the original models that came in se/pe, the orange version was a sprint run released earlier this year that came in plain edge only and had refinements to the design. There is also a carbon fibre sprint in the works.

The original first run Dodo models were available in PE & SE. I haven't seen any of the Sprint runs in SE at all. The Dodo in Spyderedge is a real beast of a cutter and works about as good as any of Spyderco's short bladed serrated knives that I've ever seen.

Also the first run models were all S30V>> well at least all the ones I ever owned were. The only Sprint run model I've seen was also S30V as well.

I remember when the Dodo was still in the main line up there was a lot of talk here on the forum of guys wanting a bigger scale Dodo. One with a longer and wider blade and a bulkier handle. I remember at least 2 to 3 threads like that but nothing ever came of it.

I believe 2003 is when the original first run models were launched and I think it was early in 05 when they were discontinued.

The Dodo design like many of Spyderco's folders were and still are ahead of their time>> Others I could mention are the Captain, The Spyderhawk and the Ayoob.

Sheesh, I've got pretty good sized hands and the Dodo handle fills my hand up just fine. I don't know what I'd do with a bigger one.

I remember impressing the heck out of a coworker with my blue PE Dodo about 8 years ago. I blazed through a roll of carpet that she needed cut and she couldn't believe I did it with my pocket knife.

The more I've used my Dodo I've come to a personal conclusion that the Dodo may well indeed be the most versatile and useful short bladed knife I've ever used. I even EDCed my blue PE version for a couple of months once until I snagged a user C-44 Dyad which took it's place in a very quick hurry.

It's one model that I love in PE but I would always prefer it in Spyderedge if I could ever get my hands on another one. I'm hoping that they will eventually put it back in the main line up with another blade steel other than S30V. I would love to see how one would perform in S90V.

The design takes some getting used to for sure. And when I got my first one back in 04 I didn't like it at first and thought it to be nothing more than a novelty blade. But just like the Spyderhawk experience I had I ended up taking it to work with me by mistake one day and I was truly surprised at how well it did.

Now I still prefer longer blades for the most part and the G-10 Ayoob has been the best EDC I've had in quite a while. But I'll always be hoping for a newer more upscale Dodo model.

The blue version came first. The black came out about a year later in response to all the "I'd buy it if it wasn't blue" posts on the forums. Both were discontinued around the same time.

The Dodo is one of those Spyderco stories for me that is typical for many Spyderfans: At first I thought it was the ugliest knife I had ever seen, and just didn't get the blade-to-handle ratio. I heard so many stories about how great the ergos and function were (on this very forum), that I decided to order an orange one. Now it is one of my top 5 favorite knives and I carry it a lot (including every day this past week). From blade size and shape, to the way it fills my hand for such a small knife...I just love it. I like that it carries "small" too - doesn't use up a lot of pocket space. I'm a fan of the open ball-bearing lock as well. I don't think it's the most practical lock out there, but I like the cleverness and fun factor it brings.

My story is totally different. I fall in love with Dodo, when I saw first time the picture.

I really want a dodo, it's one of my grails. Too expensive though... wonder how much it'd be at the seconds sale...

I think the left two are not dodo's based on the clip and blade shape and the top right one looks like a karambit. I see 5 Dodo's in that picture.

I think the orange ones have nested steel pivot reinforcements as well.

I didn't realize it until I read your post, yest it is. My orange Dodo is my most expensive Spyderco, yet it might be my fave. I didn't know if I'd like it or not, and bought it figuring it could be my first safe queen (as its my first sprint) or I'd flip it later on. Instead it gets massive pocket time, even over a forum favourite the Para2.

It is pricy but I'm glad I bought it when I did, I wouldn't know what I was missing until I got it and others may not like it even in hand but for me its great.

The first Dodos had 'squared off' tang interfaces for the ball bearing lock. This caused some lock failures and the tang interface was changed for a more positive lockup. The original Dodo's also featured a bead blasted blade-spine. The spine of the blade is finely polished on the orange sprint version. According to Eric the overall f&f and tolerances are tighter in the orange sprint run, it reflects the improvements in production in Golden over the past ten(?) years when the first Dodo came out.

The black/blue models had quite a variety of tang shapes and blade sweep variations.
