Hi, have had the Techno for a week or so now and really loving it.
I have noticed that if I apply pressure with my hands (as if I was trying to close it without disengaging the lock bar) the lock bar moves out about a millimeter or slightly less, then when I take pressure off it moves back in.
This is my first RIL, is it normal to have a "small" amount of movement
in the lock bar?

One of the designs features of the RIL is that if you grip it really tight, the lock bar moves inward (which should make it harder to disengage under exfra pressure from "hard use") some movement is not uncommon even on Sebenzas. Is there any blade play? There shouldn't be. Sometimes it just requires a little tweaking of the pivot screws. Hope that helps :)

Hey thanks for the reply, there is some blade play up and down due to the lock bar moving, but barely perceivable and only when I'm trying to move it, not when I'm holding the knife tightly. It doesn't bother me.
The gripe I have is the wire pocket clip, the back corner of it really digs in badly when gripping the knife and cutting hard.
I wish it came with the original clip as the prototype. I may put my own clip on to it later, wonder how hard the scales are to drill and tap?
Otherwise I love the knife.

Does the blade have any side-to-side play?

I once had a liner-lock where the lockbar would move when I did the same as what you described. It turned out that the blade also had some side-to-side play. Once I tightened the pivot properly (with some locktite to keep it tight), lockup was solid.

No side to side play.

Is there perhaps any oil on the lock-face?

Pretty sure that the RIL isn't supposed to have any movement of the lockbar when pressure is applied to the back of the blade. Call Spyderco and ask them what you should do.

No movement on my Techno. It's solid as a vault.

Take some REALLY fine abrasive paper and polish the lockface/tang to remove dirt, etc. I did this to a liner lock once that didn't have a solid lock-up, and this fixed it.

If the lock is properly executed there should be ZERO blade play. Not up and down and not side to side. Blade play is not normal. If your blade is moving then something is not right; perhaps the angle of lockup, perhaps the lock strength. I would. Intact Spyderco. Blade play should not be there

Mine has a very small contact point.

Congrats on the knife.
With use, the up down play should go away. Oil on the contact surface usually does not make any difference.

Hmm...I just bought one. I know either way, Spyderco will take care of us if this becomes an issue overall. I saw a video on this on youtube already! Sal, care to interject? Hopefully when mine arrives I will not have an issue. Still is a beautiful knife. Thanks to Spyderco for seeing that in this model before others. Being able to bring it to us for purchase.

Contacting spyderco would probably be best. However, I read a knife making book by someone, I believe Bob Terzuola, and he wrote that the liner lock should only contact the blade at the bottom 1/8" of the knife, to prevent blade rock.

I tried calling Spyderco warranty today but no one was there, I'll try again tomorrow.
I'm uploading a video at the moment of the blade rock which I will post soon so you can see what I mean.
No major, I will talk to Spyderco tomorrow and If they say send it in I will, Just can't imagine life without this knife in my life..lol, probably take a fair few weeks to get back as I live in New Zealand.

Yeah, not supposed to happen. I had a gerber do that once. After a month, the lock completely failed. Granted, this is spyderco, so it probably wouldn't be like that, but liner locks aren't supposed to flex like that.

Yeah, I have lots of frame locks from various makers, and none of them do that.

Uh oh....

FWIW I had a military that does the same thing, sent it to spyderco and they sent it back to me as is, said it's normal and not covered warranty.
