Spyderco X Byrd
Spyderco X Byrd
Is there any comparison between Spyderco Knives and Byrd Knives? Despite the materials used in one and another, are there models that can be compared between brands?
Thanks!
Thanks!

They generally use 8Cr13Mov which is a nice user steel. Safe and high performing tools but lacking the fit and finish/creature comforts.
The Tenacious line is China made but with tolerances worthy of the round hole. I wouldn't be resilient against purchasing a Spydie or Byrd from China. Just have expectations in line with the paltry price :) .

exactly what blerv said. I had a cara cara which was almost spyderco worthy if you don't nitpick toooo much. It was a fantastic knife for the price and ended up making a much appreciated gift for a coworker. 8Cr13MoV is comparable to 420J... soft but takes a wicked edge very easily. holds up a bit better than 420 though imo.
Experiences vary of course but for me it's closer to AUS8 having a fair amount of carbon in it. Spyderco gets the geometry right in even $20 knives which blows my mind. Like you said its a breeze to sharpen!
It's definitely worth a shot. Nice to have a user in the midst of expensive babies we charish :) . If you get tired of it as Justinl said you will make a friend very happy.

Fairest comparison would be between the Byrds and the Tenacious family of Spydercos. In that comparison, lower prices and a wider variety of locks would be pluses for the Byrds while the round hole opener and better warranty would be pluses for the Tenacious family. Comparing the Byrds with other Spydercos, the best you can say for them is that they provide good value for the money. Aside from that, material quality is anywhere from a little lower to a whole lot lower.

I've had a few Byrd knives and they are FAR better than knives I've owned in my life as far as blade steel, ergonomics, F&F, materials. G-10 on a "value" knife is great. Compared to other knives I've used in the price range thay are twice the knife. I think the blade steel is the only compromise compared to a lot of Spyderco knives. Even then 8Cr13MoV is a good steel, better than what I was used to all my live when buying $20 knives. Treated correctly they will last a lifetime. Dollar for Dollar they are probably one of the best buys in the knife world. Just my opinion. :)

Materials aside, if you are just comparing them on dimension and shape alone. The robin 2, Meadowlark 2, and Cara Cara 2 are similar to the D-fly, Delica, and Endura except that the Byrds feature a 50/50 finger choil.
