Aogami super- **** that gets sharp!

Aogami super is my FAVORITE carbon steel and one of only a few I have used. I carried it alot at 40 inclusive , it held up that good, didnt get all that sharp, I had felt sharper at that angle- dont get me wrong, it whittled hair, but it wasnt MY sharp.
It slices well, takes a good stain, cuts food beautifully, but it just wasnt as sharp as I wanted.
well, I thought to my self, " im so not taking advantage of this steel :eyeburn:"
I redid my edge bevel to 18 /side, cut a LOT better, and took a hair splitting edge- held up great, and I thought to myself " if that 2 per side made it that much sharper , I wonder what 13/side would be like :tempt:
I was previously captured by the freehand bug- mainly cause I previously broke my home made guided sharpener and wanted to reprofile something and also, I found it soothing sharpening all my kitchen knives on my new arkansas stones, so- i went to my arkansas stones, and took my back bevel to apex again. I had previously done it to 8ish /side so it didnt take long, I then polished it up to 0.5 microns.
pretty fewking close to a V edge.
I then microbeveled it at 13/side on my sharpmaker using this trick
and these are the edges I can easily achieve at this angle ! :hurra:

Mmmmm Meshuggah lol.
I can get pretty much any steel that sharp, it's just whether or not they can maintain that level of sharpness, and how high maintenance they are to keep them there and/or get them back there once i use them. My current Military is probably the sharpest knife i've ever sharpened. For some reason S30V and me work well together when sharpening, it seems easier than any other steel to sharpen for me, even easier than VG10. Must be something about how i sharpen. My Vallotton is equally sharp but doesn't always feel it since the edge is so thick, but it'll pluck hair and push cut phone book paper with the best of'em.

That vid was sweet.
Just waiting for more superblue knives to come out.
A stretch would be a no brainer but a super leaf super blue would be nice too.

i thught id add this here for the sake of showing off, its an xacto knife i did a full convex on, then did a probably 10incl primary on out of pure boredom. part of the edge passe stage 5 of the hanging hair test, where the hair severs when touched on the edge. just a hir sharper than my caly, though the caly isnt at 10 inclusive LOL

That is amazing! Super Blue is such an excellent steel, I cannot wait for Spyderco to use it in more knives.

Man, I am starting to regret not having picked up a Caly 3.5 in Super Blue now!

Yep, you should watch the secondary market. Occasionally they pop up at reasonable prices. One of my favorites and I love SB. There is a Caly 3 coming.... Just saying...
A Stetch would be a wonderful thing but Sal has indicated it's not coming any time soon. That news made me sad...

I can't believe you've been putting very fine and very well done coarse edges at inconceivably wide angles all this time.
For my own uses, I run my knives at 30 inclusive or less, just because I enjoy how it bites and cuts. Only exceptions are swiss army knives and a couple of knives that I don't want to mess up the factory grind lines.
I always get stuck running into the shoulder with a 40 degree microbevel, I can deal with a shoulder, but it seems like more work.

I took your clue, Razor and did a 13 degree angle on my SuperBlue Mule this evening (it has Cocobolo scales - the picture below was pre-sharpening). Too dark to get any pictures, but I took it down to 3micron on my WEPS with 3M microabrasive tapes and then diamond strops. Nice mirror on the edge and freaking sharp. I accidentally brushed it while it was in the WEPS clamp and neatly shaved the tip of my finger off. Didn't even feel it until it started stinging. Yow!
Beautiful steel...

I really hope to see more blade offerings in this steel.
The edges it will take look awesome.
