All these Pre-Orders ????

#1

Post by SteelyDan »

So..... All these years I have bought the majority of my knives at gun shows. Only in the last couple of years have I bought my Spidies from Internet Dealers, and I have only known about this FINE Forum for the last few months.
I see posts where members talk of receiving there "Pre-Ordered" knives finally! I am very much behind the power curve here !
Is there any chance in He11 of a fellow ever getting his hands on a, say Yojimbo, from a dealer at a decent retail price ? Will there ever be enough of these knives manufactured to meet the demand?
Is the only way to get my hands on a popular, widely wanted knife, to pay through the nose to one of the scalpers on E___ ?
I am more than willing to be patient and wait, IF there is a real world chance there ever will be enough to go around.

Now I shall retire to my dark corner and pout some more ! ;)

They will eventually become available at a decent price from dealers. This current batch is only the second, I believe. They have been hard to find so far because Spyderco didn't know how well they'd be received when the first batch was produced and was apparently caught off guard by the popularity. Since runs are scheduled many months in advance and Spyderco's Golden, CO facility is at capacity, it has taken quite a while to get this second batch produced. Rest assured, Spyderco plans to keep pumping these out, but it may be a while before supply catches up with demand.

Three ways to get almost anything in life:

1. Great timing
2. A wad of cash
3. Patience.

# 2 for me isn't as easy to execute as # 1. # 1 isn't as reliable as # 3.

The Yojimbo2 is a regular production which has faced an onslaught of rabid buyers. It should equalize once the half-decade of loyalists and profiteers get their time in the sun. Sprint run rare Para2's seem better of the # 1 or # 2 mindset because often they will run dry before the zen-like buyers can get one.

Any regular production knife will *eventually* be landed for a reasonable price from an online dealer. My personal favorites are cutleryshoppe, howes, new graham and knifeworks. In my experience, all are run by gentlemen. You will just need to be patient :)

Sprint runs are another matter entirely. For example, I knew I *had* to have the upcoming CF/Damascus Caly 3 -- as soon as I got wind of it, I secured a pre-order. I am fairly certain this one is now sold out. I did the same for the Ti/M4 milli. Now if I can just find a dealer who will take my money for a fluted ti milli pre-order :) ....

Patience, it will have to be for me. With a Home,Car,Truck and two Motorcycles to throw wads of cash at, my throwing arm, not to mention cash is pretty worn out ! :(

Go back Jack and do it again.
Actually I am in the same corner, so to speak. It seems that any knife that I
have on my wish list, is not available, either that it is sold out or not yet
on the market. Better for saving money right now, but they will all hit at the
same time and then I won't feel justified in paying that much at one time, so
a decision or two will be made.

Can someone turn the music up, I can't hear it over here in this corner.

AFAIK, while the dealers who take pre-orders don't always have the absolute lowest prices, most of them sell at fair discounts. Finding one whose prices are acceptable to you and pre-ordering is another viable option. Takes a bit of homework, and may take a bit of patience on a model the Spyderco produces in small batches at odd intervals, but eventually you'll have your knife.

While it may seem that all of the "popular" models are out of stock and people everywhere are scrambling to find them, knives are indeed being produced and shipped. I remember folks complaining about lack of availability of certain non-sprint PM2's. Just the other day I saw the all-black model in stock at CS. (They are sold out again I think, but it looks like some have been trickling in). When you find about about some neat new model and manage to get your pre-order placed, then to ease the pain of waiting you just need to go ahead and purchase one of the models that is in stock and a heck of a bargain, like the Centofante 3 for $53, a squeak for $40, or any of the wonderfully useful Salt series, all quite affordable.

That's my problem, I keep ordering more knives while I'm waiting for the last ones I ordered to arrive :D .
Which Knife, A or B? get Both! (and C, D and E) :)
