Interesting Asian Ceramic Knife Commercial

#1

Post by Nifty_Nives »

This is a very interesting video/infomercial about some sort of asian ceramic knives. I'm incredibly impressed by how sharp they got them, but the voice commentating is a bit strange.

The things they did with these blades is crazy, but I love when they say things like "the knife is so sharp, so it is such a good knife" even though that usually doesn't mean much, but i'm preaching to the choir.

Here it is

Anyone ever get their knives quite this sharp?

There must have been an error in the link to the video?? I'd like to comment, but have no basis on which to do so :)

With ceramics (to my knowledge) sharpness isn't a question. The problem is sharpening and having a decent window of elasticity.

It would kinda be like a ZDP-189 chef knife run at 100 R.C. with a mirror edge. Right?

The forum upgrade changed the default for text properties on links, so a link looks just like regular text unless you mouse over it (I like them to be blue, which should be the default). The link will appear if you mouse over "Here it is" in the original post.

The allure of a ceramic knife that doesn't dull for a long time is real. For some folks it will work until you have contact with something harder than the ceramic, you drop it on a hard surface where the blade will shatter, or it cuts materials that will finally dull it. They might do well for a while, but if they incur any damage to the edge you're stuck with it. There is no edge rehabilitation except to send it a facility with the specialized tools to refurbish it. The fact that ceramic is brittle, though hard dissuades me.

The thought is extremely seductive nonetheless :)

How much are those ceramic knives? Maybe an S30V custom kitchen knife will be ideal for people who don't like to sharpen.

I have a couple Kyoceras and two Boker folders. They are fine and if you're careful, you can sharpen them on DMTs. Not as useful as a steel knife for me and, as mentioned, pretty brittle.

Maybe you shouldn't link a video that advertises a company that has sold Spyderco knockoffs.
We would rather be the knife in your pocket, because is "works" better, than the knife in your showcase, because it "looks" better.

It's really not about the company, it's just about a funny video. Honestly i understand the concept you are going for, but I will go on a limb here to say that nobody in their right mind believes that i am supporting this company, and even less would buy knives from them. I don't support spyderco knock-offs, but almost every chinese company that sells sharp things has them. It's just part of life, I tend to ignore things like that.

If it helps: Please don't buy any of these knives, because they sell knock-offs of our favorite knives.

I would be worried about my wife grabbing the South Fork and using it on the solid surface counter (like she does from time to time with the less expensive cutlery) or drops it in the sink and chips the edge. I think I will let her continue to use the mule for that if she really wants the sharp knife. I have been tempted at times to try an inexpensive ceramic knife to see how well they actually hold up. The surely would be as "slidey" across the paper as the ones in the video. :D

You have to give the voice actor credit for knowing the difference between ra and la.

I'm glad the guys from "Better off Dead" got a real job after all that busting of Lane Meyer's ball's at every stop light. Thats gotta be an electronic voice though, no human speaks that way, whether English is their first, 2nd or 3rd language... right?

I loved those guys busting his balls. The PA system made them sound similar to the kitchen knife promo, but I agree with you that no human speaks that way.

Sadry, his "accent" is not robotic as there is quite a bit of vowel intonation that is not repeated, i.e. individual pronunciations for things with programmed repeatability in robotic voice programs.
