Anybody that has read my posts for a while know that I really love the Bushcraft. Mine is a Spalted Maple second. It's traditional style, scandi grind, well treated O1 and superior grip never cease to give me joy. It takes an edge with ease and keeps it very, very well. The Bushcraft's multi functional capability always make it a favorite when I'm "roughing it" in luxury It's only drawback is that it needs to be kept clean and dry to avoid rust.

Today I was fortunate enough to procure an Obsidian2, a rare double edged SE fixed blade. Although fashioned in a radically different style and not made by Spyderco, the Obsidian2, in a pinch, might well be able to provide much of the utility I find in the Spyderco Bushcraft. If a proper finish is applied to the handle I will not have to worry about the Obsidian getting wet at all It uses a modern twist on very ancient technology to show it's charms.

The handle on the Obsidian2 is going through refinement in a very personalized CQI template. You can see the contrast in ergonomics when compared to the Obsidian1. It still has a ways to go before it can match the Bushcraft.

The Blade however has had a radical transformation, developing a large belly that suits the blade material. It feels much more useful than the original Bowie style configuration.

The Obsidian's blade material is just that Obsidian, naturally occuring glass with a Mohs hardness of 5-6. The Mohs scale is not related to the rockwell scale and is used for judging abrasives. Although the material is very, very hard it is also very, very brittle. You don't want to drop this knife :eek:

Used judiciously, the Obsidian will not get dull, it will chip or flake first. The downside is that it takes a unique skill to sharpen and you don't really know how much blade will be taken off in the process. It is only available in SE

For regular use I would go with the Bushcraft, although the Obsidian2 has it's glamorous, aesthetic, and primitive charms. It will look great on a display board. But in a pinch????

Obsidian1 will most likely be the object of a giveaway sometime in the near future

Appreciate the skill it takes to make the knives, I took a class on flintknaping once, takes talent.

I don't own any fixed blades ATM. I've been itching to get either a Bushcraft or Mule and start there but I also have a lust for the Street Beat and I'd kill for a Ronin. They'd be used for everything from food prep to general EDC tasks.

I've been curious about the Obsidian Knives ever since you first posted about them. If I had one I couldn't resist using it on anything I thought wouldn't damage it. I've always wanted to try skinning something with a knapped blade just to see how it must have felt millions of years ago. Beyond that I'd probably keep it as a conversation piece.

I can vouch for the workmanship of the knapper!
The points i won from charlie are beautiful and show a high level of skill!
The winners wont be disappointed.
I've tried knapping myself, and it takes lots of practice and patience.
I have a few fixed blades, none of which are spydercos, but only really use them occasionally.
My most used is a small pocket bowie that i edc .
I've had my eye on the schemp rock, but haven't had the cash to get it lately.
I know it would make a great outdoors and camping companion.
The obsidian blades would be nice to experiment with, just to see how they perform and give one some idea how our predecessors had to deal with their daily cutting chores.

I don't have any spyderco fb right now. I've wanted a Spot or a swick for a while, I would use them for EDC. I would also like to try out a mule or a temp2 as a hunting knife.

If I had the obsidian knife I would use it to cut food up, and I would use it as a display knife! :D

I only own 1 fixed blade and its not a Spyderco. I've been reading alot about bushcrafting and have been playing around making shelter, fires, etc. The Spyderco bushcraft is on my list because I think it would be a great tool to help me learn the art better.

i had a spyderco bill moran drop point that i gave to my brother as his only decent knife. an aqua salt SE that is my fishing and boating knife, no rusting is fantastic. and i have a Southfork on preorder that will hopefully become my camp/kitchen knife.

I have tried flint knapping, but so far I have only made medium sized rocks into little rocks. I would use the Obsidian 1 as inspiration to continue trying to learn Knapping. I have also thought about getting involved in "experimental archeology" and to be authentic you have to use totally tradition tools for all construction, but that is only a dream for now.

I'm so delighted with the blade I got yesterday I felt I had to share this guys work with some other fellow knife nuts I really don't need to start collecting stone :o

I believe the Obsidian that's being given away was Brian's(the maker) first attempt to make a knife with stone. Since I've been showing him my knives and gifted a Ladybug zdp for Christmas he seems to be devoting more of his effort towards stone knives. I do know he likes to try using everything he creates. He even makes complete arrows with a stone point and shoots them to make sure they fly straight.

Had to post a pic with the blade backlighted. Good luck all :)

Just so the folks in the contest know......There's only about an inch, maybe 3/4 inside of the handle. Brian tries to get a tight fit between stone and wood, then uses "JBweld" to cement the blade in place. The artificial sinew seems to be for cosmetics, but adds a nice look :)

I would still opt for a Bushcraft for consistent use but the blades in the Obsidian's feel rock solid. Despite my tongue in cheek comparison at the start of the thread I would't really use the Obsidian knives for anything requiring a lot of force. Regardless of the true capacity they might have the risk of breakage for me would too high. However, the flint spearpoint needs to be attached to a stick :eek: I feel it would be quite capable in that capacity.

Thanks for the opportunity, these look like nice pieces. I have been finding and collecting stones that would make for good tools - I have found some cool knapped stones in the woods and mountain areas around here, and others that just look like they'd be good for primitive or hybrid primitive style tools, various pointy and sharp-edged stones and a big hexagonal chunk of mostly white quartz that I intend to make into a sledge or war hammer. Were I to win the obsidian blade I would be doing some materials testing as well as coming up with a native-style carry rig for camping/hiking purposes, and that spear point would make a cool dagger tip that I could also attach to a larger staff.

I have 3 Spyderco fixed blades - 2 MT05 (the 9cr18MoV Mules) that have seen kitchen duty and still don't have proper handles, and a Swick 2 that I love playing with and using for little tasks around the house. There are several I'd like to get, but those are the ones I own.
