Ronin blade question

#1

Post by black-belt-spyder »

Hello, I have a "NIB" Ronin. At least it was sold to me as being NIB. If you look at the blade from the side, looking along the entire length of the blade, the very cutting edge. It has just the slightest, very slightest amount of uneveness to it.
If you were to take the blade and place it in on a straight edge or counter top. Aprox 1/4" back from the tip, there is just a slight rise in the blade, on the cutting edge, so that the whole thing would not lay perfectly flat on a straight surface.
Is this in the design? Could it be that quality control was not perfect? I hate to assume it has been resharpened, because I honestly can not see any signs of being resharpened. Just the slight rise near the tip. Help, any thoughts. Thank you all.

I would really have to see it firsthand to make a judgment. Just getting a Ronin has my "envy meter" going crazy at this point. It was another of my ultra-Spyder classics that I had to sell to keep my ship afloat because of my financial trainwreck I suffered a little over 2 years ago :( It's one Spyderco fixed blade I would trade good for just to even get another used one. It has VG-10 steel which has turned out to be my favorite EDC blade steel. The handle is superb for a production knife IMO.

If I were you I would just be glad I got one. But if you want it strictly and only for collection purposes then you might want to send it back to Spyderco for expert examination. I did just that with 2 Titanium handled Peter Herbst models I got through great trades a few years back and it gave me peace of mind. All you would be out of would be the shipping charges. And that would give you 100% confirmation of authenticity.

One of the challenges in manufacturing the Ronin was producing a perfectly straight cutting edge during factory sharpening. Because of the relatively thin blade and flat grind the steel at the edge comes off very quickly during belt sharpening. While the vast majority of the Ronins I've seen were very well done, I have seen a few with edges that wavered slightly.

Given the fact that the knife has been discontinued for so long and is relatively rare, the only real options are to accept it as is or sharpen it yourself on a stone to correct the minor flaw.

Congratulations on your Ronin. No matter which road you choose, I hope you enjoy it and that it serves you well.

Stay safe,

Mike

Greetings Mr. Janich, While we're on the subject of the Ronin??? Is there any chance of a RONIN 2? It would be a shame that all the new folks would not get a chance at this great old Spyderco fixed blade. I would love to see a new version of the Ronin with a possible super steel like S90V, XHP, ZDP-189 or something of the kind. I know I'm not alone with that one on my wish list.

A Micarta or G-10 handle either one would be great as well. The original sheath would be fine by me but I would also be open for a newer one as well. It would make a great Sprint run if nothing else. It is truly such a great design that it would be great to see it again.

A sprint run of the original Ronin would be GREAT! They're pretty hard to come by these days.

I would feel compelled to buy a Ronin 2. No matter how little sense it might make at the time, I would feel compelled.

Such a nice knife (Ronin 1). Great design just oozing out of the thing. If the upgrade from Ro1 to Ro2 echoed the folders' upgrade from Yo1 to Yo2, I would have to buy a few.

Also, please bring me a mini-Yo. C'mon: you know you want to.

I had 85 Ronins at one time, now I have three....all had that slight imperfection somewhere along the blade edge.....Can be easily corrected with the sharpening system of your choice. Rest assured if you do nothing it will still perform the same...no reason to send it back to Spyderco.....enjoy and nice find!...Doc :)

You guys all rock. Thank you for the info, makes me feel much more at ease. I have to go now, it is early AM and I have not fondled my Ronin today, I am sure it has been a long dark night in the safe. It must be lonely there, but then again, it has lots of other spyder friends to hang out with. Have a great day. Thanks again.
