Should I buy this? I can get a brand new one for $170 at a local knife shop. I have heard it is hard to sharpen and I can't sharpen for my life. I felt it today and it is really smooth also. Centered and tight lockup.

I believe this is David's (EvilD) favorite so you should ask him.

Yes, that is a great price. I have not seen them often (new) for under $200.

But I can't sharpen and want to be able to. I have also heard it doesn't take a good edge

You can mail them in for sharpening for return postage. It would prob stay sharp for 6 months for the average user unless you cut yards of cardboard a day.

I agree - buy it. It is a truly great knife. The 20CP steel holds an edge for a long long time. If you want to get it sharpened, send it in to the Spyderco folks. For postage, they will sharpen it for you free. Otherwise, you can look for a local sharpening service.
Who knows, you might even be able to convince a Forum member to sharpen it for you if you ask nice...

I have heard otherwise about the edge capacity. If you would like to purchase 2 I will gladly trade you a lifetime sharpening service in trade for one of my own :D Just let me know when you are ready to mail mine!
P.S. Ted was reading my mind

Buy knife. Buy a really easy to use sharpener like a Spyderco Sharpmaker. Be happy.

Go for it. Mine's hardly left my pocket since I got it, and the edge is easier to maintain than you might think/hear. Be advised the scales get dirty quick, but are easy enough to clean. Also that price is pretty hard to beat.

We must get our information from very different sources - it is a SOLID category 1 blade steel, compared to S90V and M390 on Ankerson tests:

For $170 I'd definitely pick it up.

My grey para did this, I guess it's good enough for me.
Edge polishes up well too.

Correct. It's a **** of a knife and for $170 i'd buy a second one. I paid $220 for mine plus another $49 in shipping which was later refunded (long story) so i was prepared to spend $269 for it. I sharpen with an Edge Pro and found it to be TOO easy to sharpen, having removed too much steel the first time i reprofiled it.
My only complaint about this knife is a complaint more onto myself and how i use knives. I've realized that because i like to touch up my blades on a daily basis, a steel like this is sort of wasted on me because i'll never let it get to the point where the longevity of its edge retention really shines. That aside, i do love knowing that it's there if i ever need it. Also i did have some chipping issues with it, but using a micro bevel solved most of that. Also i should note that the chipping was found after cutting a LOT of corrugated boxes which everyone pretty much agreed was **** on an edge regardless of the steel.
