A New Hawkbill: YES!! It's High time!!

#1

Post by JD Spydo »

We fanatics of the arched blade are way overdue for a newly revamped or a new design Hawkbill blade. We need one with either VG-10 or one of the supersteels. I would also hope for a G-10 Handled version ( with the Harpy being at the top of my list)

Most of us that I've spoken to want a G-10 handled, VG-10 bladed Harpy or maybe something entirely new or even maybe a bigger version of the Harpy>> some want a colored G-10 handle but others are content if they could get a conventional black one.

Some folks have suggested a newly revamped version of the Superhawk but there has been some disagreements as to what type of handle material. Although it gained a lot of fans with it's blade style.

A few radical folks ( myself included:rolleyes :) would even like to see the complete resurrection of the original Spyderhawk with VG-10 steel. And a G-10 Spyderhawk would truly be the "Cat's Meow"

I do love the Harpy although I think the current stainless handle could improved upon. Yes A G-10 or maybe another Carbon Fiber version.

So what do you all exactly want on the next NEW HAWKBILL? Now's The Time: For Your Hawkbill Needs to Be Met. OK let's talk Hawkbills

Just to be easy I would love a Merlin sprint with a FFG ZDP-189 blade. Merlin on the fact that the Tasman is designated as a "Salt" knife and it might confuse folks.

I can certainly agree with that>> especially this newer generation of G-10 is absolutely superb>> My new standard EDC the C-60 Ayoob PE with the G-10 handle has been such a huge blessing and such a very versatile folder.

Which ever Hawkbill comes forth I too want to see one with a G-10 handle. I've always thought about what a colossal folder that a G-10 Spyderhawk would be. A G-10 Harpy would probably be BLADE magazine's knife of the year.

Even a Merlin with a G-10 handle would be cool. Or to go a step further what about a Hawkbill Dyad with a G-10 handle. You couldn't go wrong no matter which model you chose.

The FRN to me, feels cheap... I'd be willing to pay a bit more for G10.

You Just Can't lose with G-10 handles: Especially with a Hawkbill

Now I'm not a hater of FRN because I do like it in some knives and especially in the Salt Series where I think it's most appropriate.

But for an everyday EDC I don't think there is currently a better handle material than the new generation of G-10. A G-10 Harpy with a VG-10 blade would truly be a functional dream.

Another thing I like about G-10 over FRN and stainless is the grip factor and the fact that it can withstand just about any punishment you can dish out.

A G-10 Hawkbill just makes perfect sense. It would make any Hawkbill a completely new knife. It sure did with the Ayoob model>> it's a completely different and a much better knife.

FRN doesn't feel cheap, it IS cheap. ;)

Consider this...

The Matriarch FFG sprint was about $65. The hollow-ground version on the Endura4 platform (with liners) is an extra $10-15 and that's a cheaper way to grind.

The Superhawk was $165 in it's hay-day with CF scales. Right now the Superleaf is $120 from Cutlery Shoppe and it's probably using most of the same R&D work as the previous model.

I'm a self-proclaimed cheap skate :p . I think many people are as well. Few people really understand the Hawkbill and less are willing to pony up $150ish for one. On the other hand moving a ton of FRN linerless hawkbills in some crazy steel for $80 seems doable. Boring but doable.

I would be very interesting a a G-10 Hawkbill with a SE. Something along the size/weight of a manix 2 would be very nice. I have been very tempted to buy a Harpy, but the stainless handle has prevented me from pulling the trigger.

Well don't feel alone "Davidig" because the stainless handle has kept a lot of people from pulling the trigger :(

Hey I like your initial idea of a Hawkbill the size and scope of a Manix 2  >> To have a ridgid, bulky, thick bladed Hawkbill is an original, never heard of before idea of sorts>> I have never heard that idea suggested before. The Superhawk was truly a ridgid Hawkbill but even it didn't have the brawn that a Manix 2 sized Hawkbill would potentially have.. This is very interesting and a darned good suggestion to put on the table.

It would be great to have it made in Golden CO USA with either Crucible or Carpenter steel too. Second only to a G-10 Harpy this is my favorite suggestion thus far.

I did a thread on fixed blade Hawkbills some time ago and I would welcome such a beast to the Spyderco line-up. I do vaguely remember that "boomerang" thread from days gone by>> I also remember "Ceya's Hawk" which was an interesting design as well. I do look for Spyderco to eventually do a fixed blade Hawkbill.

But the more I think about this "Manix-like" Hawkbill that was suggested the more intrigued I am. I even have a name I would like to give it>> how about the "BULLHAWK">> a Hawkbill as ridgid as a BULL!!

Spyderedged Hawkbills:>> Most definitely!!

Any and every Hawkbill should be available in Spyderedge>> A Hawkbill with a Spyderedge just has so many advantages for so many rough cutting jobs. I do own plain edged Hawkbills and one of my most treasured is my PE Blue VG-10 Spyderhawk. But I do have limited uses for PE Hawkbills.

For my EDC Hawkbill I always pretty much carry a Spyderedged Harpy or Spyderhawk which ever the occasion may call for. To me a Hawkbill without a Spyderedge is the difference between a target arrow and a hunter's broadhead.

I wanna see the Manbug with a PE hawkbill blade, and i personally would rather see more thick tipped EDC worthy reverse S's than more hawkbills...they're just a little more versatile while still having that awesome hook tip.

I'd love to see a new Harpy, G-10, with a PE or SE blade.

All the more reason I'm pumped about the Lil Matriarch. Hopefully it's popular enough to do a PE run. Maybe ZDP-189 while I'm dreaming :p .
